Artvoice's seventh annual battle of original music provides an excellent showcase of local talent while also allowing artists a chance to compete for a $5,000 grand prize. Tonight, the fourth round quarterfinalists will perform at Nietzsche's to decide who moves on to the final round, scheduled for June 14th at Sportsmen's Tavern.
The event will feature indie rock band The Screaming Jeans, whose sound brings to mind Vampire Weekend, The Strokes, and The Smiths. Currently, they are taking time to record their debut album with hopes of releasing and promoting it sometime this summer. Punk rockers MayDay! will take the stage with their energetic, aggressive sound that has been compared to acts like Iron Maiden and Skate Korpse. Soul-pop artist Michael King will perform with his band after winning UB's 2013 Battle of The Bands. Mic N Life aka Mic Excel and Legal the Lifesaver of the Essential Vitamins Crew collective will bring their classic hip-hop sound to the competition and will be joined by EVC producer Covert and DJ Optimus Prime. Events like this bring out the best in our talented local music scene and are an excellent opportunity to get a taste of the eclectic mix of original sounds coming out of our city.
Chicago's Archie Powell and the Exports are making a stop at DBGB's tonight. Full of frantic verses and melodic choruses, these guys craft smart and cynical songs that represent the new age of garage rock - led by the unfortunately unemployed rather than the unemployable slackers of the early 2000's. Local support comes from The Screaming Jeans and Made Violent. DBGB's is hosting this one at 9:00pm. They didn't specify a price, but it can't be THAT expensive.
Tonight, one of Buffalo's best live bands, Aircraft, will be performing their unique blend of psychedelic 60's-influenced pop. Note: Aircraft's four-way harmonies, keyboards, and other instruments allow their music to have both danceability and indie cred at the same time. Joining them will be the brit-pop folk-rockers in The Screaming Jeans. The show is at Mr. Goodbar and it starts at 10:00pm. The cover is a mere $3, so you'll have plenty of money left over for an expensive IPA or a hard cider or something... Which reminds me - sorry kiddo, this show is 21+.
Two acts, no strangers to playing live and playing live together, will once again join forces this evening at Mr. Goodbar. Having recently nabbed a couple Buffalo Music Awards nominations, the Screaming Jeans have been prepping for a return to the studio early next year to lay down some new tracks. The Tins, meanwhile, have been working on a new EP of their own, in addition to recently recording a Daytrotter session to be released in the near future, so chances are some new tunes could be mixed into this evening's sets for both acts. Music for tonight's double bill of indie pop gets going around 11pm. Cover is $3.
Head down to Nietzsche's tonight for a triple bill of some noteworthy local acts with long names. Fresh off their opening slot for Our Lady Peace at Rapids Theater in
Niagara Falls, The Screaming Jeans are one of Buffalo's most tireless
live acts. They will be joined by female fronted blues explosion Randle and the Late Night Scandals and surf rock trio Bryan Johnson and Family. You can't really go wrong on a Thursday night with three diverse, established performers in one of Buffalo's most enduring live music institutions. For a $3 cover, you might even be able to afford one of those fancy European beers.
The Pixies are a group you should know about if you follow our blog. They are essentially "the" band; the cornerstone for indie-rock, alternative and everything cool in underground music. They were one of Nirvana's biggest influences, both lyrically and sonically. They're also one of my favorite bands.
If you've never gotten a chance to see the Pixies live, you're in the majority. The band was broken up for much the 90's and early 2000's. Despite reuniting in 2004, they have only visited WNY a small handful of times.
Fortunately, Buffalo has the next best thing. Crackity Jones, a most excellent Pixies tribute band, will be performing tonight at DBGB's along with Deathbells and the Screaming Jeans (9pm, $3). Expect to hear a diverse mix of b-sides as well as Pixies favorites, including the classics "Where is my Mind," "Velouria," and "Debaser" (at least I hope). The Pixies are awesome and should be celebrated. I'm glad that Crackity Jones is up to the task.
If I had it my way, Infringement would last two months, not two weeks. Now we are onto night nine of Infringement.
9pm RonaldRaygun @ Mohawk 2012 has been a big year for Raygun. First, former front man Steve Gordon stepped to the side to focus more on his guitar licks. Second, Gordon was replaced with riot girl songstress Ashley Kyle. The addition of Kyle’s gritty, raw vocals influenced by her classic rock idols has revamped the band’s previous indie rock leanings to a whole new direction. Now they are like if Bif Naked added a theramin. I bet you a hundred dollars their bassist wears huge sunglasses.
10pm –Handsome Jack, Sleepy Hahas, The Screaming Jeans @ DBGB’s Two veterans of buffaBLOG’s Infringement Party (Handsome Jack and Sleepy Haha’s) will team up with alt-rock quartet The Screaming Jeans. Handsome Jack’s feel good retro –blues rock will make you feel like you are time traveling back to the 70s, but only until Sleepy Hahas bring you back to speed with their modern indie rock a la Arctic Monkeys/Queens of the Stone Age.
2am – The Love Scenes @ Soundlab Electronic duo consisting of Buffalo’s indie songstress Leah Loefke and the Teller to her Penn TJ Grace. The two will be playing select songs off their recently released album Blissed Out Youth. It will be a late one, but the band’s perfect combination of dreamy vocals with upbeat electronic instrumentation will be a great way to come down while staying up on another fun-filled Infringement fueled night.
On this Monday morning, I can guaranteeeee, that you should infringe a time or two... or even threeeeee... because Monday evening, oh Monday evening you will surely beeee, listening to music at Mohawk or DBGBeeeeeeees!
We're several days in, now, and already there have been successful performances in abundance around downtown. What's in store for today? Read on to find out:
Listen to your inner movie buff and start the day at Filigrees (on the corner of Elmwood and Forest) with their Monday Film Fun event. Three movies will be screened and the event goes from 12:30-5:30PM. Red Green Totem, Decency in Kind, and Thin Red Line are the the films to look forward to this afternoon.
Crane Library (Elmwood Avenue) is playing host to a myriad of unique events today and, had I not been scheduled to work today, would probably be my destination of choice (I go out to see music quite a bit... gotta change it up sometimes, oui?). There will be Celtic Storytelling from 1:00-2:00PM featuring stories of healing and repose shared in the Bardic style and accompanied by the soothing sounds of a Celtic harp.
Take a break, grab a bite to eat, and head right back to Crane Library at 4:00PM for the performance of Incident at Deer Lick, a satirical piece dealing with the three M's (murder, mystery, and marriage, of course). Franklin LaVoie will be performing as Buffalo's former editor of the Courier Express... Mark Twain.
The final event of the day at Crane Library, "Symphony #3", starts at 7:00PM this evening. 'Tis a puppet show featuring a man and his dog who attmept to rediscover and reconnect with society after living in solitude... in a hand-dug hole underneath a highway billboard. All set to the music of Aaron Coplands' "Symphony #3".
Nietzsche's will be holding the aptly titled Best Monday Ever today. The event goes from 6:00-10:00PM and features 30 minute sets from the following bands (in order of appearance): Jamey Kern, Autoverse, Chacko P. Coltrane, Frigid Giant, Lloyd MacHardy, Blue Lazer, and Lazy Ass Destroyer. Nietzsche's is the de facto epicenter of Infringement Festival and always promises to have killer shows throughout.
My personal pick for music event of the night however is a "choose your own adventure" of sorts... it will be a fairly easy choice for most. Do you prefer rock music (in the vein of indie/alt)? THEN CHOOSE PATH A! Tend to lean towards electronic music stylings? THEN CHOOSE PATH B!
Path A leads you to Mohawk Place from 8:00-11:00PM for sets by various alt and indie rockers Mob From Atlantis, The Merchants, and The Screaming Jeans.
Path B takes you to DBGB's at 10:00PM and keeps you there until question mark PM/AM (who knows?) for Monday Mixdown with Drop D, Nobez, and DJ Soma. Plus, bonus for those who show up early, DBGB's will be hosting the Monday Funday Open Mic Night from 7:00-10:00PM.
If you were new to Buffalo and trying to find out about the local, independent music scene tonight's show at Mohawk Place would be a good place to start. Representing a variety of sounds and styles all four of these bands demonstrate what makes Buffalo's scene so great; diversity, and lots of it. Headlining the bill is Sea Snake Vs., a rock trio turned quintet of the darker variety, along with Buffablog's favorite beach rockers Bryan Johnson and the Family, the (aptly) hyped Screaming Jeans, and self described "organica" artists Scantron. T.G.I.F. It's Friday, I'm in love. Use any slogan you want. Just make it to Mohawk tonight. Shows at 9.
Anyone who remembers this year's Infringement Festival probably didn't live it. The ten-day festival brought out the best in Buffalo music and art, and attendees may have intermittent recollections of one of it's indomitable organizers, Sparky, rushing from venue to venue around the clock to make sure nothing fell through the cracks. Tonight, a couple friends are gathering for Mr. Spark's birthday blowout at Nietzsches (248 Allen St, 10pm, probably $5). The line-up includes Cincinnati's energetic noise-punk-hop Lazy Ass Destroyer, the space-scraping alt-pop of Screaming Jeans, and buffaBLOG's favorite whiskey-chugging blues troubadours The Merchants. Randal and the Late Night Scandals will be rocking out in the front of the house between sets, so let the last thing you remember tomorrow morning be the decision to head over to Nietzsche's (please drink responsibly).
The Screaming Jeans, one of Buffalo's busiest bands as of late, will be playing Mr. Goodbar this evening. The quartet was just recently selected to be a part of the Best of Buffalo Benefit Album. Last month, voting took place to pick ten bands, all of whom would record a track for free, to be featured on the album. The recordings will be funded through donations, and for $10, your generosity will get you a free copy of the album once completed. All proceeds go towards Music is Art. For the full list of bands selected, you can check out the site here. The band looks to hit the studio to lay down their track this weekend. Music begins at 11:00. Fleet Street, a six piece, brass infused rock act will open. Cover is only $3.
