Picking Up The Slack For MTV: Pixies - "Bagboy"

Yes, Kim Deal is no longer a member of the Pixies.

No, that's not Kim on "Bagboy," but the backing vocals bear a spooky resemblance to the beloved and lately errant bassist, despite the fact that it's a dude.

I'm not sure how to feel about this track. Like Dad's new girlfriend, she sounds nice, and she looks pretty, but she smokes and wears heels. I don't know if she's trying too hard or what, but it's not mom. Mom would take us to the quarry and sing about luxurious fabrics. Or she'd do a dead-eyed impression of someone playing rock and roll while we sat and wondered what we should do with our hands.

This new one lectures us about hygiene. She tries to tell us stories. Dad seems happy, anyway. I just don't know how to feel about that...about any of it.

Tonight: Crackity Jones (Pixies Tribute)

The Pixies are a group you should know about if you follow our blog. They are essentially "the" band; the cornerstone for indie-rock, alternative and everything cool in underground music. They were one of Nirvana's biggest influences, both lyrically and sonically. They're also one of my favorite bands.

If you've never gotten a chance to see the Pixies live, you're in the majority. The band was broken up for much the 90's and early 2000's. Despite reuniting in 2004, they have only visited WNY a small handful of times.

Fortunately, Buffalo has the next best thing. Crackity Jones, a most excellent Pixies tribute band, will be performing tonight at DBGB's along with Deathbells and the Screaming Jeans (9pm, $3). Expect to hear a diverse mix of b-sides as well as Pixies favorites, including the classics "Where is my Mind," "Velouria," and "Debaser" (at least I hope). The Pixies are awesome and should be celebrated. I'm glad that Crackity Jones is up to the task.
