Lesionread Reveals New Video


2013 has witnessed the debut of numerous bands and acts that we have buzzed about to the Buffalo scene, notably Strange Acres, Forealists, or The Malones. One act that emerged onto our radar in 2013 was freaktronica artist Lesionread. Paying his dues at Kevin Cain’s Inventory Mondays showcase at Hardware, Lesionread quickly became known for his “out-there” showmanship, which included odd parlor games and spazzy dance moves. From there, Lesionread aka UB student Shawn Lewis, began performing live regularly in Buffalo and eventually went on tour this fall with Cinnamon Aluminum’s Kristachawan.

This past weekend, Lesionread posted a video for his song "Acceptable Damage" on YouTube, and it is just as weird as you’d expect, complete with clips of sea life, playing with the carpet, dancing around, and repeatedly referring to himself as a “her” in a font only a mother could love. Fans of a more obnoxious YACHT or Yip Yip would dig this. Check out the video collaboration below, featuring TOATS ORIG’s Malt Disney’s editing prowess.

Tonight: Cuts & Breaks


The vibrant culture that surrounds Buffalo hip hop will be on full display tonight at The Vault arthouse. Cuts & Breaks is a celebration of the four elements of street art and will showcase the city's finest talent in hip-hop, breakdancing, and graffiti art. Artists performing include Dr.Ooo, Mic Excel, Mad Dukez, Jack Toft, Shuteyes with Charlie the Butcher, Koolie High, Essential Vitamins Crew producer Cove, Keith Concept and Legal the Lifesaver.

 The event will also feature a gallery show of the canvas work of various graffiti artists who will get a chance to enjoy the spotlight as much of their work is undeservedly overlooked. With all of the elements of Buffalo hip hop culture coming together, tonight will serve as an important opportunity for the scene to gather and acknowledge their contribution to the local musical landscape.

 Doors open for the downstairs gallery at 7pm, with the music starting upstairs at 9pm. Tickets are $10 presale or $15 at the door.

Check the Le Printemps video for "Real Eyes"


Fans of Buffalo's much missed psych poppers The birD day take note.  No, the group has not returned home from Portland, but rather their former rhythm section, Jon Riggie and Ben Steinmetz, has ventured off onto their own project, titled Le Printemps.  This past fall, the duo released A Whim..., a collection of laid back psychedelic rock, not sounding too off from the early chillwave tunes of Toro Y Moi before he moved on to much funkier pastures, or even some of the solo offerings of Animal Collective's Panda Bear.  Give the EP a listen on their bandcamp page and in the mean time, check out their video below for A Whim... stand out "Real Eyes," a TOATS ORIG/Malt Disney collaboration.

Tonight: Death Disney


Toats Orig member Jake Barber is a man of many talents; a videographer, an artist, and one of the masterminds behind the growing Toats Orig brand.  Known by many as MaltDisney, he will be debuting his artwork tonight at The Vault as a part of the Buffalo Infringement Festival.   Originally a two person show, Brooklyn based artist MC Deathbear unfortunately had to cancel.

MaltDisney was born from a night of Super Smash Bros and drinking forty ounces of malt liquor with friends.  His persona is definitive of the art he produces.  With the manipulation of our childhood Mickey Mouse memories, his work is a twisted innocence.  Incorporating themes of darkness, paganism, and sexual deviance, Maltdisney's work has the power to evoke those dark emotions that hide within us all.  It's hauntingly relatable.

“I’d rather be infamous than famous. I’d rather be both,” he told me during an interview two years ago.  By the looks of it, he's been making strides in the passing time.
