buffaBLOG Guide to Halloween

There are a few holidays that Buffalo seems to just go way overboard for(in a good way of course):  the 24 hour drunken fest that is also known as St. Patrick's Day, Dyngus Day aka the Anderson Cooper Giggle Fest, and of course, Halloween.  Rather than just one day of costumes, candy, and mischief, we turn it into a two week gaggle of endless parties.  Like every year, the possibilities are endless and frankly overwhelming, so we decided to help you make up your mind and suggest some of the top parties for breaking out your best costume and generally make an ass of yourself.  With parties already starting up this week, we figured we best not waste any more time.  *This post was previously published on October 19th.

Dark Disco III
Friday, October 19th
Soundlab - 110 Pearl Street
Kicking off the witching season tonight be be DARK DISCO III presented by Toats Orig along with Only Comrades, a new Buffalo underground clothing company.  This will double as their launch party.  Dark Disco is themed around the dead and the cool.  The past two Dark Disco parties were held at the Vault, but now it has moved to Soundlab where the atmosphere will probably get even stranger.  Toats Orig would like to encourage everyone to dress in black and funeral attire because this is serious fun.  Musical performances include Miosi, Mario Bee, and Esbie aka Buzz Trillington.  Admission is free before 10pm and $3 after.

Monster 2.0
Friday, October 19th
464 Gallery - 464 Amherst Street
Our list of Halloween events continues with tonight's MONSTER 2.0 over at 464 Gallery on Amherst St.  This is the second consecutive year that the gallery will be hosting this live mixed media art event.  Along with the many local art installations, live art and projections will be taking place.  Check out awesome visuals from Keith Harrington and VJ Deliria.  Music will be provided by Projex, Trakbenders, Lulu, and Drapes. There will be some FREE libations, and the Amy's Place Food Truck will be parked right out front.  Suggested donation is $5.00.  Costumes are encouraged.  Festivities begin at 6pm, and the installations will run through the 31st.

Prom of the Dead: My Coney Island Baby
Saturday, October 20th
Dnipro Ukrainian Center - 562 Genessee Street
In my completely biased opinion: The Best Halloween Party in Buffalo!  Prom of the Dead began 2 years ago and is the annual fundraiser for Torn Space Theatre.  TST provides audiences with the best underground and visceral theatre performances here in our city.  Prom was, to many, a high-school nightmare, and what better way to increase the fear by adding blood thirsty zombies into the mix?!  Come dressed as whatever the hell you want.  This year's theme is "My Coney Island Baby," paying homage to the freakish sideshows that lined the boardwalk of the historic American amusement park, some of whom will be showing up to perform freaky feats of amazement   Also on tap this year will be several more beer stations featuring Coney Island Craft Lagers from Schmaltz Brewing Company.  Musical performances include Dr. Know, Handsome Dan and Rev. Johnny Drama, Money$nake, Projext, and UVB-76.  As always, there will be everyone's favorite prom photos, which your parents will cherish forever.  Drinks are free for the first hour from 9-10pm, so be sure to get there early and watch this party come to life.

Vote Zombies
Saturday, October 27th
Hamlin House - 432 Franklin Street
This friends only party at the historic Hamlin House went through a drastic makeover two years ago when they brought in MNM Presents to help make the event a public happening.  This party has become very popular because of the acts they've brought in, and the fact that there is free booze with the cost of admission certainly doesn't hurt.  This year will feature a live set from Rochester livetronica darlings The Manhattan Project, along with DJ sets from Cutler and Papi Chulo.  There will be a highly contested costume contest, and some snack food will be provided at some point during the evening as well.  Festivities being at 8pm, and beware the ghosts.

Myths and Legends
Saturday, October 27th
Nickey City CO-OP - 208 North Street
How about a Halloween Party for a cause?  The Allen Town based CO-OP's annual party returns for another year of live music, craft brew, and even a fire performer.  While the full bill of music acts has yet to be finalized(past acts have included the Tins and Free Henry!), the one confirmed act that peaks our interest is the debut performance of Steak & Cake Records' latest act, the electro dance outfit Signo Vinces.  Party begins at 9:00pm.  $5 with costume, $7 without.  All proceeds will help support the NASCO Institute.

Halloween Party
Saturday, October 27th
The Vault - 702 Main Street
Located in the heart of the Theatre District, the off beat art and performance gallery has put together a great lineup of Rust Belt acts to help get you in a spooky spirit.  From the British Psych Invasion tribal rockers Aircraft to Pittsburgh's laid back rockers The Milkman's Union to the guitar/drum duo A Hotel Nourishing, wearing a ridiculous costume has never sounded so good.  Doors open at 9:00pm.  $4 with costume, $5 without.

Monsters Ball
Wednesday, October 31st
Duke's Bohemian Grove Bar - 253 Allen Street
On Halloween night, get wild over at the Bohemian Grove with their annual MONSTER'S Ball.  This raucous Halloween party will feature a costume contest with top prize being $500!  Runners-up will receive Bills tickets and gift cards.  There will be plenty of dancing with sets from Looney Tunes, Drop D, Owski, Bearskinrug, Swagglerock, and Loki.  The night begins at 8pm, 21 and over with a cover at the door.

Witches Ball
Wednesday, October 31st
Hotel Lafayette - 391 Washington Street
The newly reopened and remodeled Hotel Lafayette looks to be the biggest Halloween Party of the year.  At the time of this publishing, the RSVP list is already close to 600 guests for the first public event at the legendary hotel.  The party will include a little of everything from a zombie walk to a Frankenstein wedding to a steam punk fashion show. As for music, DJ Culter, the Ifs, and the Irving Klaws will be on hand.  Tickets can be preordered here for $20 or buy them at the door for $25.  The event page hints at some creepy hotel shit ala The Shining going down.  Will it be like this?  Only one way to find out.  For more info on the party, visit here.

SOUNDLAB

The undisputed yet underground king of glitch music. This jumpsuit donning music junkie has been a premier Electronic music producer for a long time. Hailing from the Bay Area, David Sugalski will hit up Soundlab in support of his latest EP release "Superpowers." This album is a departure from the usual digitized symphonic creations that he emits. The EP is themed around the consummation of man and woman and spirit. Giving it one listen will surely engage the Swadhisthana chakra. The greatest thing about Sugalski, is that he shares a ton of his music with fans. In fact you can download the new EP on his webpage HERE. Check out this talented guy tonight!

This Friday night Toats Orig along with Only Comrades, a new Buffalo underground clothing company will host Dark Disco III at Soundlab. This will also be the launch party for Only Comrades. If you know about or went to the first two Dark Disco's you probably wont be seen. That's because you'll be donned in black, or funeral attire at the request of the party. Now moved to Soundlab we'll be a tad closer to hell, in the basement. Performing at this installment will be MIOSI, BUZZ TRILLINGTON, and MARIO B. Check out the promo vid below.

Now of course there are plenty of activities to do on Saturday night as well; however, the best place to be will be at Torn Space Theater's annual fundraising event the PROM OF THE DEAD. Check back on buffaBLOG for our guide to Halloween happenings, and find out more details about Prom along with many other events happening this witching season here in Buffalo. Much Love.

Tonight: Prom of the Dead

It's back! Last year, Torn Space Theater hosted an awesome Prom of the Dead and they are back to do it again. The even takes place at DNIPRO, Ukrainian Cultural Center, which is easily one of the coolest venues in Buffalo and perfect for a bunch of zombies to dance in. The party features an open bar from 9-10 pm (Ukranian beer is great) while bluesman Dan Harper performs a solo show on stage. The entertainment will be at one of its high points when The Fucking Hotlights take the stage to battle it out against Vic Lazer in a battle of the bands. The music doesn't end there.... DJ's Lopro, Projex and Handsome Dan take over the stage to spin some epic 50's - 60's soul funk music to keep you dancing all night long. Make sure you stop by the creepy photo booth to get your costume documented by photographer Douglas Levere (click here to see last years photos). buffaBLOG's very own The Drum Machine Report writer James Wild will be emcee for the night and will help announce this years Prom King and Queen.

Tickets are $15 presale, $20 at the door. Visit http://www.promofthedead.com/ for more info.

The Drum Machine Report

Rolling in the deep are Buffalo’s talented artists. This weekend is studded with events and parties that will stage their talents, and offer you the opportunity to get out and spend some quality party time with friends. Use buffaBLOG and this week’s Drum Machine Report to help map out the itinerary and you cannot go wrong.

It’s hard to believe that a whole year has gone by since the first ever Prom of the Dead (fundraiser for Torn Space Theater) held at the Dnipro Ukrainian Home. Last October this event was the talk of the town, and word is heavy on the street that it’s gonna pop off again this year on Saturday night. The DJs this year will delve a lille bit more into the modern realm. They’ve added PROJEX and DJ LOPRO into the mix of art, rock, and zombie themed weirdness. The idea was to add a little oomph to the dancefloor areas of this already raucous party and play some more of the things we may have heard at our proms, rather than our parents’ proms. This event promises to be one of the funnest parties of the year! So go. I’ll be emceeing the night, and if you want a massive double high-five, I’ll be happy to oblige.

TOWN BALLROOM

681 main st. Buffalo, NY

So if it wasn’t for the Disco Biscuits, I would have never gotten into Electronic and Dance music years ago. I may still be listening to some noodle-y String Cheese! Bleh. J/K. Sorry I had to joke while making that point, because the evolution of music is just what Michael Travis and Jason Hann are trying to push with EOTO. Combining the fun party elements of a DJ set with live instrumentation. And their success can be measured by selling-out shows and getting great reviews from performances all over. It also helps that they are genuinely nice guys. Check them out at the Town Ballroom with Buffalo DJ, BIG BASHA, who needs little intro. If you know, you know, BIG BASHA’s sets are fire.

I’m really really excited for this. Last year I attended Roctoberfest at the 464 Gallery and boy oh boy was it cool. This year’s edition, called MONSTER will be an expansion on that idea. A collaborative mixed media event with art, music, and video installations. Three exploratory floors of fun and oddities with music and art in a spooky state of congruency. Check out the full list of artists HERE.

Prom of the Dead is back from the grave

Like Jason Voorhees or Freddy Krueger, it looks like our favorite Halloween costume ball will be back for another year. Recently, the people behind Torn Space Theatre have been updating the Prom of the Dead website, Facebook & Twitter pages with pictures of zombies & random costume advice, but as of now the details remain somewhat scarce. The date for Prom has been set for October 22nd & pre-sale tickets, which went on sale today, are 15 bucks.  Rumors are already starting to fly about who the musical guest will be. Sources close to us have indicated Vic Lazar and his crew will be back covering another 90's artist (possibly Nirvana).  Professional creepsters The Fucking Hotlights might also be on the bill. Check back because we'll keep you updated once we get the complete line-up.
