Tonight: Porches


The Glitter Box is hosting a great little bill this evening, a perfect way to end your music week. The shallow West Side establishment will be hosting Porches, a five piece currently on tour from Brooklyn. Their dark and somber blend of indie rock, dubbed bummer pop (I like that term), is very Pedro the Lion-esque. Local support for tonight is a bit across the board: Bobby Griffith's droney and ambient VWLS project, laid back folkie Nick Gordon, and the debut live performance from the indie pop act, Inquiring Mind.

 Music kicks off at 6pm. No cover is noted on the event page, but bring at few bucks to take care of the touring band.

Tonight: Jonathan Wood Vincent - "Lo a Buff"


Tonight’s 7:30 event at Ashker's Cafe in Elmwood Village is going to be the storm Buffalo needs to break this unbearable heat. Jonathan Wood Vincent, a grumbling, statuesque piano player of tie-silk pants from NYC who performed beautifully at the Triangle House show Wednesday, VWLS, a Buffalo meditation tent art project, and T.J. Borden, experimental cellist and prolific young music nerd, and master of Buffalo noise, Pat Cain are going to scream and crackle and caress their way into the atmosphere, electrify the whole city with the voice of a jungle. 

The music, each set a different style, will trick listeners into feeling like we’re in a rickety aircraft, dipping over magnificent landscapes: the ocean waves crashing so soft below we barely believe in motion outside the mind; dead mountains poking like nails through the crumbling, white ground; trees so dark and purple we misread sky blue. Dots of wild buffalo, birds, and flying fish. Kicked dust, sheets, and boots. Tornado houses, sand-storm jewels. Waves and waves of heat. And then, salty lightning and rain. First, hard. Then the kind you like to walk home in.

Tonight: Fire Death and Ilza


And just in case Limp Bizkit isn't on your agenda for tonight, this evening the Vault will host an lineup of experimental music acts put together by Foundry, an up and coming production company based in Buffalo. The event will feature Cleveland based Fire Death (in the territory of free jazz coupled with heavy electronics) and Ilza (minimalist / atmospheric). They'll be accompanied by local sound troubadours VWLS, Ay Fast, and Kevin Cain. Doors open at 8PM and $5 will let you through. See you there.

Tonight: Tuurd


The bar is already set pretty high (low?) when you've named yourself Tuurd. I didn't want to focus on the band name, but you've gotta be kidding me, right? It's hard to find info about these folks on the internet besides a tape/record on Bandcamp, but I will say this: they live up (down?) to the name. The Rochester bass/drum team plays some sludgy, sludgy songs - take the doomy drone of Om, and then intermittently toss in some bass-funk-grind a la DFA79, but slow it down a bunch. They'll be at The Vault tonight (702 Main St, 8PM, $5) with Wild Gone Girls, Baczkowski/Sack Duo, and VWLS, and I'm sure there will be enough headbanging to go around.

Tonight: Blues Control


For years, Blues Control had been putting out noise/drone records from Queens, NY – imagine a mix of Ariel Pink's old bedroom tapes and the lo-fi musings of Cluster. Recently, the duo relocated to Middle of Nowhere, Pennsylvania, and while their sound does seem a little cleaner (replace the Pink tapes with Tobacco ones), it's still dark, psychedelic, and undeniably theirs. They've shared stages with revered acts like Deerhunter, Animal Collective, and Fucked Up while steadily making a name for themselves, and now they're bringing it to Soundlab (110 Pearl St., 9PM, $8). With performances by sonic artists VWLS and Pat Cain, this should be a noisy night all around - even the neo-americana-leaning Nicky Gordon is slated to proffer a more experimental set. If you do drugs, do them; if you don't do drugs, don't do them – just do your thing and head on down.

Tonight: Yek Koo & LA Lakers


The Vault will be hosting a menagerie of sounds this evening at 8:00PM (sharp, they say).  Yek Koo and LA Lakers are sharing their sultry sounds with us all... and that means ears will be coddled and minds will be expanded.

Why? You ask.

Because when I listen to both of these bands I think of the glorious chaos of an orchestra rehearsing/tuning before the show starts as everyone is filing into the venue... except this orchestra is full of cyborgs... and some random damsel is wearing an extravagant headdress and doing a rain dance in the middle of the stage... and everyone is on LSD.

Joining Yek Koo tonight will be New Zealand soundscapers: LA Lakers.  Both acts share a similar style, one that was developed in New Zealand under the influence of the "free-noise" movement.

Tickets are $5 and the touring artists are supported by local acts Totem Pole and VWLS.  Make no bones about it, tonight's show is going to be super out there... which is super awesome.  Go get your face melted.
