The National and Mad Men: two of my favorite pleasures in life that just so happen to have a little bit in common. Both tend to be on the dark side and both go best with a fine whiskey. The video for "Conversation 16", from The National's brooding 2010 album High Violet, features actor John Slattery, who plays advertising executive Roger Sterling on the show. You can have your Don Draper, but Roger is my guy. Always one for a great one liner, Roger never says no to a drink despite his heart problems or the time of day, and is straight up playboy, although some would say womanizer. You can even buy his memoir, the perfectly titled Sterling's Gold: Wit and Wisdom of an Ad Man.
Well now that I am done with my Mad Men tangent, on to the video. Slattery plays a secret agent protecting and secretly pining for the attention of the slightly off female President of the United States. Alright I can't resist. Is it just me or does Don Draper/Dick Whitman come to mind when National lead singer Matt Berninger sings "I'm a confident liar"? Anyways, enjoy the video.
