Know Your Opener: Jesse Sykes & the Sweet Hereafter

Babeville's Ninth Ward will be filled with the sounds of yesteryear as Seattle-based foursome Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter pass through the city, co-headlining with the Sadies. Though the group is creating music classified as psychedelic in the present day, don't expect to hear something akin to MGMT or Animal Collective. These four are purists and will transport you back to 1967.

Releasing its first full-length album in 2003 to critical acclaim, Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter takes us back to the hippie folk groups of Woodstock but with an electric edge. This year's tour supports the group's release from August, Marble Son, marking its fourth full-length release that has again impressed its audience by so accurately mimicking its predecessors. Sykes voice remains calm yet steadfast (like a female interpretation of Robert Plant at his more subdued moments) while the accompaniment of Phil Wandscher, Bill Herzog and Eric Eagle is a clear take on the iconic San Francisco sound.

Tonight's show begins at 8 p.m. with doors opening at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15.
