New Cinnamon Aluminum EP

Buffalo's electro-psych trio Cinnamon Aluminum is currently working on a full-length follow-up to last year's Mad Monty in the 8th Dimension of Nine, but they've just dropped an EP to hold us over while that cooks. Holdin' It Up was released for free on the group's Bandcamp page this morning, and it features five of brain-scrapingest tracks they've put out to date.

Never ones to fear experimentation, the EP shows the band moving into ever stranger sonic territory. It really isn't until the third song – “Upon My Horsh” – unfurls from a Joan of Arc, Dick Cheney, Mark Twain-esque soundscape into an Eastern chant refrain, then blasts through the warping synth jam "Parents of Sorcerers," that we hear the familiar Cinnamon Aluminum psychedelic dance sound. Chants were a significant component on Mad Monty, and they're featured here as well (with a couple even donated by Buffalo's ancient astronaut of folk, Yes Yes' Mike Ersing).

There seem to be some homages present, too: the titular track is reminiscent of Remain In Light/Speaking In Tongues era Talking Heads Id-funk (compounded by the line, “And this is where I come from/ This is 1980's New York”), and the song “Who Told You You Could Do Dat?” is straight-up, straight-up Tom Waits.

Download it now, and keep an ear out for the upcoming full-length, We Ate The Wrong Crab Spirit.
