Album of the Week: Empire of the Sun - Walking on a Dream

This edition of "Album of the Week," is not a new release by any means, in fact it was released to the world way back in 2008, but that does not change the fact that it is really a great album.  Australian electro duo, Empire of the Sun, put out their first and only studio album to date entitled Walking on a Dream.  The album received very mixed critical acclaim and went on to have four singles, including the two most popular tracks "Walking on a Dream" and "We are the People."  The band was heavily compared to MGMT and their hit "Walking on a Dream" was considered Empire of the Sun's "Time to Pretend."  The rest of the album comes up fairly short, the tracks have the potential to be great but never seem to get there and lack that "Wow" factor that keeps a band relevant.  For me though, I am a sucker for 80's style electro pop and have a soft spot for tacky drum beats and uninspired synth.  Possibly if they had a different producer, some of these tracks might have received some more attention and really turned in to something incredible.  Still, after four years, even though this album was not a complete effort, the two aforementioned tracks for me still hold true and have me listening to the band here in 2012.  I guess it just proves that you don't always to have to love the entire album, sometimes all it takes is just a few songs to grab your attention and hold you for the duration of the ride.
