It looks like The Flaming
Lips are angling to be the patron saints of Record Store Day 2012, the high
holy day of music fans in North
America and the UK . To mark this year’s RSD, the Lips will be
releasing a compilation of their 2011 collaborative efforts with Neon Indian,
Prefuse 73, Lightning Bolt, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes, and Yoko Ono… along with new collaborations with
the legendary Nick Cave and indie starlet Bon Iver, and hopefully Lykke Li and
Erykah Badu (Ke$ha? Meh).
Previously released
throughout last year on handmade vinyl albums, usb drives embedded in gummy
skulls, gummy fetuses, gold dipped human skulls, plastic light toy doodads, etc.,
this material was pricey, hard to come by, and thus regrettably enjoyed largely
via YouTube. Sure, YouTube is good for checking out new music and live clips of
your bands, but it’s no substitute for rocking it on your stereo, especially
when it comes to The Flaming Lips, a band you’ve got to listen to loud. Because
the Lips are awesome however (I credit their Midwestern upbringing), there was
always the promise of a proper compilation in 2012, and hot damn, they are
following through in style.
Usually I sleep in on
Record Store Day and get to Record Theatre in the early afternoon to see what’s
up. This year, I might be camping out.
