Special points are given, however, to a band that can revision a song in a creative way. True Womanhood's treatment of Pictureplane's "Dark Rift" takes what was an abstract breakbeat with Pictureplane's patented "Prince meets throaty child molester" vocals and transforms it into a straightforward electro pop song. If I were to listen to the two versions cold, I would've figured Pictureplane to be the one doing the cover, as True Womanhood's take is much more confident and assured. It's amazing what a fresh set of ears can do. Check out both versions below and do your own cover/original Pepsi challenge (somehow clicking the links with your eyes closed).

Advice to would be electro rockers looking to stand out: put a cute brunette on the bass. Also, having some inspired covers on hand doesn't hurt. Brooklyn based True Womanhood pull off something tricky here that should normally be a faux pas, they covered a song less than ten years old. It's something that pisses me right the fuck off when I see a band cover a recent popular song. The crowd goes "Gee whiz! That sounds just like the original! These guys really have something here!" Why do these people go to shows? Listen to your iPod and save some money.
