NXNE Artist Spotlight: Cai.ro

When listening to 2011's The Young Love, the six-track EP of five-piece Canadian Indie-pop outfit, Cai.ro, you get all the sonic contrast and emotional trappings you’d expect from a double LP in just over 26 minutes. The first track “Addict” brings forth gentle acoustic plucking against placid vocal harmonies that immediately capture the listener, coaxing the ear with lushly arranged string instruments. Halfway through, “Golden Cup” offers sprawled guitar-warp sprinkled over encroaching waves of bass and cymbal. By the time you’re at the last track, “Halfway There”, you feel as though you’re right where you want to be, floating down a stream of piano (which honestly reminded me of Radiohead’s “Pyramid Song” upon first listen) poured gently over lead singer Nate Daniel’s vocals as he croons about a relationship that is unraveling, “But then I got the deepest oceans / Brimming full with other sharks for me / I spill my blood for the cold reaction / And watch them closely as they come to feed.” Each song provides something different than the last, and the maturity of the songwriting is prevalent in both instrumental orchestration and lyricism. This is definitely a group to keep an eye on, especially in hopeful anticipation of a future full-length release. In the meantime you can hear The Young Love in it's entirety at the band's website, or buy it on iTunes.

The group has been called a "must-see" live act by Toronto's NOW! Magazine, and if you like what you hear there’s no reason why you shouldn’t take a short ride up to Toronto for the buffaBLOG co-sponsored NXNE Day Party Showcase next Thursday, June 14, at The Horseshoe Tavern, starting at 12:30 pm. The show is free and Cai.ro will be there, as well as Buffalo locals The Tins, and Son of the Sun. Other Canadian acts will be playing as well, including Elk and Allosaurus. Check out the Facebook event page for more information.
