Uncovered Cover: The Shins cover Magnetic Fields

Shins frontman James Mercer recently appeared on "Like A Version," a cover show for Australian radio station Triple J to perform, naturally, a cover of "Andrew in Drag," one of the few highlights off the otherwise average Magnetic Fields album Love at the Bottom of the Ocean.   Mercer introduces the tune, which you can watch below, while answering some hard hitting questions from the Austrailian hosts.  Joined by new Shins members Richard Swift and a very sharply dressed Joe Plummer, Mercer's sweet vocals are a nice departure from the normally dour baritone of Magnetic Fields' front man Stephin Merritt, while Swift provides subtle harmonies and keys along with Plummer's minimal percussion.  The Shins don't reinvent the wheel on the cover, but a new take of an already good song is nothing to discount.  Enjoy.
