To kick off the many events circling around the turn of the year, we decided to begin the list by highlighting MNM Presents interactive, collaborative shin-dig at the Pearl St. Grill & Brewery called 'Sound in Motion.' Three live acts will be paired up with a DJ and create a visceral and sonic experience that is unique to this area. Roots Collider, hailing from Rochester, brings their electronica-funkadelic spins to the table with Sigma the Turntablist, Rhubarb, a deep-funk group that's been running the mill for over ten years teams up with DJ Marco's Udagawa, and Space Junk, Buffalo's local jam-dance act will take turns with DJ Drop D. Since the flow of a DJ's act is somewhat different than a group's jam, this will be a challenging sonic balance for them and a sure-way to boogie for us. Festival mainstays Jimkata are bringing their electro-rock hybrid sound to Duke's tonight. Supporting their fan funded album Die Digital, the four piece have been consistently gaining steam over the past few years with high profile sets at festivals such as Camp Bisco, Mountain Jam and Summer Camp. For my money though, music like this is always best enjoyed in a packed club. Duke's has been doing a remarkable job filling the live music hole that Mohawk Place left behind, expanding on their DJ night mainstays with an eclectic schedule of live bands across all genres. Electronic jam four piece Space Junk open the show, who I'm told were the highlight of their show at Duke's earlier this month, making the $7 cover a steal. Doors are at 9pm.
