Destroid (Excision, Downlink and KJ Sawka) were scheduled to perform at Rochester's Main Street Armory this Thursday, Dec. 5, until it was mysteriously cancelled. Apparently, the artists weren't informed about the reasoning. Mike Marshall, of MNM Presents, took the reins and the event has now been moved to Buffalo's very own Town Ballroom.

The artists voiced their irritation via the realm.

Thanks to Marshall, their resilience did not go unappreciated, and fans now may only have to take a quick Metro ride or cab downtown for the show. Rochester folks will have to make the trip.

All tickets (which were $35 online) for the Rochester event will be refunded. Flavorus Fan Club tickets will be refunded the difference and can be used at the show. Tickets purchased through other means (ie. the box office) will be refunded at some point, but a new ticket must be purchased for the Ballroom event; cover is now $20.

 

The further removed I am from my college days, the less I care about the night before Thanksgiving. Billed as THE party night of the year, the night is used as an excuse for college kids to see their fellow co-ed friends back in town after a tough semester and proceed to go absolutely HAM. While I have been known to partake in the debauchery in my younger years, these days I worry how I will function getting up at 8am to run the Turkey Trot. Oh well... BUT, if you do feel the need to go hard tonight, you could do worse than what the Hotel Lafayette is offering. An ambitious, multi-level/room party, titled The Night B4 Thanksgiving, will take over the recently renovated downtown gem of a building.

In the Pan American Room, you can catch long time post-rockers Lazlo Hollyfeld, a living, breathing New Orleans inspired party in 12/8 Path Band, and a handful of DJs. Head upstairs to the Only Comrades curated 3rd floor where the street goth kings, who just came off a successful trip down the runway at Mass Appeal, will be hosting the likes of visual display artist Projex, interstellar duo UVB-76, and others.

Other rooms will include a collection of Igloo house DJs (Paul Kuenzi, Rufus Gibson, etc.) in the very clearly titled Igloo Music Room. Full schedule and lineup can be found right here.

If you don't already have a ticket, price of admission is $20 at the door. Doors open at 9pm.

The Christmas Party. In the years I have lived in Buffalo, each year I would pack my suitcase, shut down my dorm room or apartment, and head home to Syracuse for the holiday season. I would return and hear every single one of my friends talk about "The Christmas Party," although never in full-detail. This party, in my eyes, became a wintertime enigma.

While my school books are collecting dust in my closet, I have entered the real world. Although I will miss my month long vacation from responsibilities, and this year I'll have to wake up at the crack of dawn on Dec. 26 to head to my day job, I am ecstatic that The Christmas Party is an experience I will finally have.

What seems to be the most wild holiday party of the year has just been announced by MNM Presents for 2013.

Welp, this will come as a real treat for all you bass-heads out there. Tonight, Shaun Brockhurst, aka Doctor P, will be dropping a full set at Town Ballroom (courtesy of MnM Presents), As a performer, he knows how to work a crowd, as a producer, he has generated a lot of widespread buzz, garnering acclaim as being one of the most exciting names pushing the dubstep movement forward today.  And tonight, all of us in the area have a chance to experience him at his prime as he tears the Town Ballroom up with his concoction of dubstep, "bro-step", moombahton, and drum & bass. He'll be joined by Notixx and MITIS.

After the boat head over to Pearl Street Brewery where the back patio will be bumpin'! This is the return of a great weekly party that washes away the Sunday night blues like no other. Each Sunday night Buffalo DJs will get a great opportunity to share their talents, whilst you enjoy drinks and Sunsets on the infamous back patio. The best part is that it's FREE!

Tonight's launch party will feature DJs RUFUS GIBSON, 3PO & RYAN LIDDELL, BRANDON CHASE, and LALKA.

Jimkata will be stopping at Nietzches in support of their latest album, Die Digital. The four piece Ithaca natives won their claim to a fan base by locating a harmony between two dominant genres, as described on their facebook page "Analog synthesizers and heavy bass notes fill the electronic role, while big guitars create space for shredding within the structure of pure indie rock." They've played their fresh hybrid at music festivals in the northeast such as Summer Camp, Camp Bisco, and Mountain Jam. They will supported by Pigeons Playing Ping Pong. The event starts at 8:00PM and $10 will get you through the door!

Duke's gets a little bit of European flavor tonight by way of Om Unit, London's prolific producer and remixer. Known for a vast array of quality remixes for the likes of Daedelus, Shigeto, Fracture and Pixelord, as well as high profile collaborations such as his Dream Continuum project with Machinedrum, Om Unit's repertoire is deliciously promiscuous. His driving, spacial downtempo beats go anywhere from frenetic breakbeat to meditative four on the floor, all while maintaining a melodic flourish that is often absent in modern EDM. With support from Killsound, Mark Kloud and Buzz Trillington, this is a can't miss opportunity, especially for a measly $10. MNM Presents does it again. Doors are at 9pm.

Electronic jam super-group Conspirator have separated themselves from being just a spin-off of The Disco Biscuits. Forming in 2004, Disco Biscuits members Aaron Mangner and Marc Brownstien started a new musical journey that is now no-longer just a side project. Tonight, they are making what has become a common tour-stop at the Town Ballroom, one of their favorite venues to play in. Coming off their latest release, the Unleashed EP, the band has added Pendulum's tour drummer KJ Sawka along with Conspirator regular and Raq guitarist Chris Michetti. What's more is that on this tour, they have brought along their friends Break Science, Adam Deitch and Borahm Lee, whose duo has made waves and gained a lot of new fans in the electronic jam scene in the past two years. 

Both bands will take the stage with a high level of good energy, so if you are a fan of this type of music this is a show you would regret to miss. Even if you can appreciate talented live drumming, the quality of these two individuals performing tonight in Sawka and Deitch is paramount and again not to be passed over. Tonight, Caspa returns to Town Ballroom for round two. Last year I was blown away by the show, you can read my full review here. An originating DJ and producer of dubstep, Caspa is OG. Reading through the article and thinking about how phenomenal the show was, I have no doubt in my mind that his performance will be incredible once again. His remix of deadmau5 and Kaskade's "I Remember" still gets me all wildly emotional; it's a classic that I'll never stop listening to. Caspa and the other DJs opening the show are bound to bring a spectacle.

Opening the night will be duo Claw and Richie August, otherwise known as HULK, in addition to local performances from the ever talented Notixx and also DJ Stuntman.

Thanks to MNM Presents, I had a pretty wild and awesome music fueled weekend. To start with, Brillz on Thursday night at Duke's Bohemian Grove Bar was a killer show. It was refreshing to see the dance floor at Duke's so packed throughout the entire night. Buzz Trillington and Shooter McNappin, from duo team SwaggleRock, opened for Brillz with a ghetto sexy set. With spikes lining the rim of his flat brim hat, Brillz transitioned smoothly from track to track.

"I dedicate this song to you four girls," he said as each of them twerked themselves into a frenzy in front of the DJ booth as he drops "Big Booty Bitches." 

A Duke's employee sneaked swiftly on stage with a roll of masking tape, to which someone behind the table of equipment then helped tape Brillz's laptop to the stand. In addition to the girls grinding and twerking on the speakers in front of the decks, the packed dance floor jumping up and down, and the crew and myself dancing on stage behind him, the laptop began to violently shake and flop. The masking tape worked as a perfect straight-jacket restraint for the crazed laptop.


I have two main reasons why I love going to a show on a Sunday night. First, it keeps me motivated to do things all day long instead of turning into a Lazy Sunday; I went on a cleaning frenzy, did every single bit of laundry, finished all of my work, rearranged furniture and ran errands yet was still amped enough to doll myself up and head downtown. Secondly, it makes Monday that much more exciting as I walk around doing my usual routine thinking about what happened the night before.

Sunday night, MNM Presents brought a great show to Soundlab. Surprisingly, I believe this was the first time I ever saw Rochester's Papi Chulo perform, and I was quite impressed. It was space groove and even for how early in the night it was, I was pleased to see that people were already dancing so early at a Sunday evening show. Following him was Samo Sound Boy; the visual projection and screen that were brought along for the "Magical Properties Tour" were highly appropriate for the name. A grid of colors projected on him and he was camouflaged with the background when suddenly the dimension changed and behind him was a dark silhouette followed by a gridded silhouette encompassed by a dark screen. It was entrancing. Even with relatively simple transitions between tracks, his set was very up and flawless.



To be completely honest I was most looking forward to Ryan Hemsworth's set. His track selection was totally on point. His performance was mostly trap vibes and the occasional slow jam (I laughed when Usher's "Let It Burn" came blasting through the speakers, but I'm also not going to lie. I was loving it.) The visual projections became even more intense as a cartoon sea took over the screen while little cartoon hands holding cartoon guns stuck themselves surrealistically out of the cresting waves.


Daedelus, the headlining act, followed. I was looking forward to this since I have never seen him perform before and after making the stupid decision of not going to see Yeasayer last year, I continue to hear through friends and my fellow buffaBLOGGERS how incredible the entire show was. However, I was not as totally blown away as I thought I would. Now don't get me wrong, I think that he played a helluva set and he definitely was giving off a lot of energy for the tiny basement venue. My major critiques were the difficulties with the sound; I'm not totally positive what was happening but something was off and the leveling was not as clear as it should have been which to be quite honest was distracting. Also, I was hoping to hear more of the romantic down tempo tunes that seemed to be his M.O.

All in all, shout out to MNM Presents for providing a damn good weekend for Buffalo. 

I have a feeling tonight is going to be a beautiful memory to add to the Soundlab collection. MNM Presents a top of the line bill of musicians: Daedelus, Ryan Hemsworth, and Samo Sound Boy. Opening the night will be Rochester's Papi Chulo.

Self-acclaimed "full time musician, part time Dandy," Los Angeles based Daedelus will be headlining the show tonight. A blend of romance and electronic, his music has an after-hours feel. It's the feeling of holding someone close and walking down rain covered streets with only the hazy street lights to glow a path, or that instantaneous feeling you get when you see the moon on a night when it is so close in the sky you feel like you could run after it and touch it. Then he can flip the switch and has some tracks that have a darker feel, and some that are the downward fall into the rabbit hole.




Be on time to the show to catch Ryan Hemsworth. Canadian DJ and producer, Hemworth puts out tracks that I wish I had back in high-school when we'd cruise around listening to mixtapes from Datpiff.com. It's well-crafted and lustrous trap. He cranks hip-hop and brings about a nodding vibe. In addition to being dear to my heart for putting out amazing music, Hemsworth is also a journalist.





Also based out of Los Angeles, Samo Sound Boy, has a very interesting sound. Upbeat and bouncy it's club music, but there are different characteristics that make it so much more unique than limiting it to be considered just "club." Alongside with Jerome LOL, Samo Sound Boy is the founder of Body High recording label. "It's one of the most influential labels in the U.S. right now...some of it's really soul, disco, future club music, and everything in between," BBC Radio 1 introduces their mix for Diplo and Friends.

Brillz, under Mad Decent and Slow Roast Records, is coming through Buffalo tonight and performing at Duke's Bohemian Grove Bar on Allen St. In addition to maintaining an enigmatic alias, Brillz has become one of the most prominent names in the trap game. His remix of Zedd's "Clarity" is perfection and he's also widely known for his collab with Etc! Etc! and Diplo on "Bueller."




Opening the night will be Brother Bear followed by SwaggleRock, the DJ duo comprised by Buzz Trillington and Shooter McNappin. These guys have been on a steady incline over the past several months. Recognized and featured on multiple music blogs, they are frequently putting out quality tunes.



There should be no cheap excuse to miss this show. Crank overdrive, get your work done, take a cat nap and get yourself to Allen. And if you're worried about a headache from all of the fun you had tonight getting in the way of your Friday, well, that's a problem worth bearing, if even a problem at all.
