Tonight: On the Wire


It's that time again people. Every month, Ohm Lounge (Main and Allen) hosts On the Wire: an alternative dance party for those looking to dance to something...um...alternative. New wave, 80's, death rock, goth, industrial. All the darker formats are covered. Last month, the same people who brought you On the Wire hosted an 80's party of epic proportions so you can expect this to be a banger as well. There's a heated patio, drink specials, and your favorite DJ's Jason Draper and Aaron Andrews. Good things to look forward to. $5 gets you in. Starts at 11pm.

Tonight DATSIK arrives in Buffalo for a show at the Town Ballroom. He has been getting a lot of attention from the mainstream media as he has embarked on this tour. It's being said that he is a innovative presence in the Dubstep scene. Sadly the American media has tied him with the label of Dubstep. Personally I don't think he makes Dubstep music, he is influenced by Dubstep-and Hip-Hop, but he's more in the realm of BroStep. Datsik is one of the popular American producers that toes the line of being too prevalent. He gained so much notoriety after doing excellent remixes of The Crystal Method, Bassnectar, and MGMT but that wasn't that long ago. Really he hasn't had years of performance experience, but ironically has been on some of the biggest stages in the world! Tonight he'll throw down a lot of great music, so decide for yourself what you think of this top-flight "DJ." by heading over to the Ballroom tonight. In support will be MAYHEM, GETTER, and BONE-LOC (formerly Bones Jones) from Rochester.

The Drum Machine Report


It is not uncommon for an opener to upstage a headlining act. This is happening more frequently, and when it does it's always kind of funny, or pleasantly surprising! Last Saturday at Duke's, HOOGS played right before   MISTANOIZE on a Bass-centric bill. Though I'm usually impressed with HOOGS, I have to say I was blown away. The Drum and Bass he was playing transported me back to high-school. If you have never checked out his productions, I would strongly encourage you to do so, because that is one guy who by experience is creating underground music correctly.

This weekend, Buffalo will feature a big-name artist from the UK who is a local fan favorite. A little over a year ago, CASPA took the stage at Town Ballroom and showed our people why he is one of the best! After getting rave reviews from the show last year, MNM Presents is bringing him back for round number 2. Fans of dubstep will converge on the Ballroom tomorrow night for this momentous and hopefully annual occasion; let us as fans of EDM show him our appreciation for his music and the culture in general. Now the Igloo crew will migrate down Elmwood to a very classy place in Nektar. Still the same mature vibes and deep house sounds. this week will feature back-to-back sets from 3PO&RYAN LIDELL, BRANDON CHASE&PAUL KUENZI, and GREG HOWZE&LALKA.

The Drum Machine Report


The reviews out of Bass Mountain were all beaming. Many attendees said that they were extremely impressed by the live performance of Shiftee. Many accolades to all of the producers and performers involved.

Recently announced was the return of Caspa to the Town Ballroom on Friday March 8th, which is rapidly approaching. Last year’s show was incredible, and a man of his caliber is not something to miss.

Plenty of things going on this weekend as far as dance music goes. Things kick off tonight with an artist on Mad Decent and one on Deep Medi Musik each at different Allentown venues.

The Drum Machine Report

This blog post is an vehicle to reach-out to the readers of buffaBLOG who like Electronic and Dance music. The Drum Machine Report is a preview of events and commentary about things involving EDM and Buffalo. Many times I’ve chilled up here on my high-horse and used this opportunity to express my opinions about genre nomenclature and respecting others taste in music, and I implore you to allow me to do so right now. I overheard a young gentleman inquiring of a group of younger gentlemen if they had ever heard of “trap” music. They kind of seemed dumbfounded so the first man listed of some examples of music they may have heard of, Bassnectar? Excision? Diplo? Drop Rari? What! What is that? You can’t do that! I’ll grant that he wasn’t particularly categorizing these all as being “trap” necessarily, but THIS is my problem. I understand that he was just being nice and trying to connect something recognizable for the kids, but this is why young people say Skrillex is Dubstep and Deadmau5 is House. Why must these constrictors be shackled on to on an artist by people and media? I hate genre names, yet they are a necessary evil. For example Two Fresh is playing tonight at Duke’s, how would you describe them? Hip-Hop? Electronica? Trap-House? I don’t fucking know! I definitely wouldn’t have described them as Trap-House when I saw them three years ago at Camp Bisco! I would’ve said they were Hip-Hop fusion, and I would have been wrong, because it doesn’t fucking matter! If you like a certain kind of music than you like it. It does not matter what other people call it or how you describe it to them--even if you love Skrillex (sorry Sonny you’re always my go-to). I’ll come down now and just humbly ask everyone reading to respect music and how everyone chooses to appreciate it.

Well shit. Now let’s tell you about what’s going on this weekend.

Frosty Tone presents N-TYPE. This is a big wan for all the Dubsteppers. Among those in the UK Dubstep scene from eight years ago this lad is respected by the best and loved by the fans. He played the famous Fabric Nightclub in London less than a week ago and is playing here at OHM on Saturday--Yup. So show the respect if you like-a the Dubstep and underground Bass music.

There are a few other events continuing this weekend that are worth mentioning that may be for your tates including: Toats Orig--Anything Goes at Sinful Nightclub on Saturday hosted by Buzz Trillington and Shooter McNappin and also The Guestlist Party on Friday featuring DJ D-Star at Nektar. Also Saturday night is the NDRGRND party by Igloo Music at a location yet to be disclosed! This party is going to have two rooms featuring many styles of House and Dance music for an epic all-night rager, but if you don't have a ticket you're probably out of luck as this word-of-mouth party sold-out. The Drum Machine Report


Like the air temperature this winter, the climate of collective consciousness is constantly fluctuating in Buffalo. Us positivists are constantly shielding a barrage of bitterness and negativity grown out of many years of hardship and loss. Alas, we are the weight to balance these ideas, the youthful minds who will soon take over this city and lift it forward into the future! The work of change is never-ending, and only willing will rise up.

With the new year comes new happenings. It is a blessing to have some fresh things going on with a couple of new events happening this Friday. The Drum Machine Report focuses on what events and parties are going on that feature all styles of dance music every weekend in the Queen City. Check out what's happening now:

The Guestbook Party is a fresh party for designed for Buffalonians who love EDM to experience something cutting-edge. The idea is to trend away from the misconstrued ideas of what dance music is currently on Chippewa. Lets face it, Buffalo nightclubs are trashy and stupid by comparison to those in big cities. But we as patrons of these venues, and aficionados of dancefloors are not oblivious to what's new and hot. DJ DSTAR and Promoter Sean Coughlin are wanting to bring a small taste of that big-city flavor to the upstate. DSTAR who is one half of the buzzworthy Solidisco is going to be playing mostly Deep House and NuDisco. Nektar is not the first place you think of for a party, but it should be interesting to see what kind of crowd is drawn in. Check out some of the Solidisco music below through their Soundcloud and hear why they are quickly gaining more attention on the national level.

This night is also going to feature many new DJs that I haven't ever heard of. So it will be interesting to check this out in the coming months. The Drum Machine Report

The music never stopped. It never will. No matter what humanity will face, music is an essential part of our being. People will carry on their musical traditions into the next age, regardless of medium. Without computers and xlr cable, dance lovers will have to get down with jaw-harps and jug bands, but as long as there is electricity we will continue to light up the night with flashy melodies and big time basslines. Let whatever future hold on to the heart driving rhythms of composed electronic music.

Music in 2012 returned to a raw emotional state. Lyrically and musically this year has been about making less, more. Personally I am enamoured with "best-of" lists because it makes one appreciate that quintessentially, music is about diversity, and to experience everyone's diverse opinions and ratings is fascinating!

Bad Boy Bill is one of the most well known names in Dance/Electonica music, partly because he co-founded Beatport, but more importantly because he has been one of the most influential DJ/Producers after the rave generation. Tomorrow night get ready for an amazing Electro-House dance extravaganza that is sure to make you scream. You won't want to miss it when he takes the stage tomorrow night. The Drum Machine Report

Crossing the threshold of the security, a rush of blood pulses through your veins, a sinking feeling deepens your gut. Into the venue you stream with the other heads in anticipation of that guy you wanted to see. That guy who's gonna twist some knobs, push some buttons, or the guy who's gonna turn the guitar up really really loud. There's that sinking feeling again. Was it something I ate? Why yes, yes it was. The chemicals are whats effecting me, but I came to hear the music, to feel the music.

Unfortunately mind-altering drug usage and Electronic and Dance music will always be tied together. This is a very touchy subject among the community of people who enjoy EDM music. The only reason I want to mention this is because for years I have heard people, even in the scene, perpetuate the idea of needing drugs to enjoy these particular styles of music. That is simply not true. You don't need drugs and you don't need robot-ears. I think I like this music because of Nintendo 16 bit tunes, and 90's Cartoon theme songs. Taking drugs before concerts or listening to music is a choice and it may enhance the sensory experience, but it does not have any bearing on if you're appreciating the music itself. I don't ever wanna hear from anybody young or old, "oh you need drugs to like that music." Um, f*ck you.

Buffalo loves October anxiously. We know whats coming so its time to load up, on everything. There will be no shortage of parties going on this month, what with everyone's favorite ghoulish and slutterly-amazing holiday approaching.

That's sorta like a double-rainbow only better. This was before double rainbow. Back when Cotti was making grime in Brixton. Back when Stenchman played Merlin's! One of the first "big-deal" shows that Frosty Tone did. This is a big deal too, so get yo asses over to Ohm tomorrow night for some OG dubstep and Bass music. First time Mix Chopin was here, not many decided to check it out. Second time, he got a little better idea of how BLO can party it up with the atmosphere at Duke's. Hit the sauce then hit the dancefloor for some classic Saturday night fun.

The Drum Machine Report

The City of No Illusions shall hide no defect. We are rusty, we are tried. Thus is the nature of Buffalo. That is no reason for those who depart, to do so with such acrimony in their hearts. Be grateful of the thickened skin you’ve attained from braving the economic and social setbacks of our fair City. Everyone who lives here, be it briefly or lifetime, is somehow positively changed by compulsory growth of character.

One thing that I am grateful for is the plethora of local talented musicians here. Be it Bands, DJs, or Do-It Yourselfers there is plenty going on in our music scene on any given night. Thats part of what buffaBLOG is all about, bringing those facts and our opinions to you, our readers. 

With this weekly post, the Drum Machine Report, I can only hope to tell you about the Dance Parties and Shindigs that are going on any given week, and to help expose the local Artists, Musicians, Promoters, and the Businesses involved. Many of whom are very talented and gracious individuals. 

We’ve truly reached the dog days of summer, and when humans start to act like dogs they get goofy and itchy. Salt & Pepa kick off an energetic weekend of music at the harbor tonight, and theres some interesting things going on in the Dance music scene at some cool venues. Take a look below:

Heading up to North Buffalo on Friday night? The Sidebar will be a cool hangout as it usually is, but on this night will be bumpin' with performances from some local Buffalo DJs. Three of which I've never heard of before DJ ZONG, who has a hilarious name, and ALEX VLUAJ and BRANDON VULAJ, whom I can only assume are brothers. Also taking the vibe to many different places will be three performers that are on fire right now, RUFUS GIBSON, MIOSI, and PAUL KEUNZI. Check out some of their recent stuff below. On Saturday check out the sheik vibe going on over at Buffalo's off-the-radar nightclub Sinful. The EVOLve party picks up again this weekend and is taking place after a Fashion Show presented by the venue earlier that evening. Swank. Something that I have been hopefully anticipating is seemingly coming to fruition here in Buffalo. That is a movement of nightclub owners to reserve nights for the "Not Top-40" Dance scene, and what's more is that it's at a club not on Chippewa st. A nightclub where one can enjoy a clean vodka drink on a couch fancier than their pants. Similarly to Rendezvous, this club has a compacted big-city feel. Another thing I have been anticipating is the return of OONASLIM to Buffalo! Oona has traveled all over the world perfecting her crafts of DJ and artistry. In performance, she fingers through different music as though she was tickling the listeners pineal gland. Taking her audience to nearly hallucinogenic heights and creating danceable dimensions unknown to the human mind. She is not to be missed, and in a posh nightclub it will be interesting to see how the music and listener evolve together. In support will be DJs JUST DUBBS, PAUL KUENZI, CHRISTIAN DHARMA, and GENE LINET. Listen below to the mix Oona did for Beatport earlier this year.

The Ultra Lounge has a club like feel with a seedy kind of film over everything; a negative that is accepted for the savvy Buffalo night lovers. Expect a healthy mix of Dubstep, Drum n Bass, and House from TEMPERS ROUGE, DROP D, NECKBRACE, DA BUTCHA, DEMI GOD, PERCEPTOR, LOKI, and BIG BASHA.

She's kinda got a Progressive/Tribal house thing going on but certainly not limited to that. Playing some of the best rooms in Toronto, she's seasoned to make another performance in Buffalo. Local support will be provided by some classy individuals, PAUL KEUNZI, A-BLOCK (RUFUS GIBSON & KITZ), ED SANTIAGO, and SUNGLASSES MIKE. The newer club is conspicuously located on Delaware near West Tupper.
