Check Out Medison's Winter 2013 Mixtape


There is only one day remaining in this year, and a million more days to enjoy Medison’s 2013 Winter Mixtape. Released five days ago, Buffalo’s DJ Medison shows exemplary talent and fun in this new mix available to stream on his SoundCloud page.

The opening guitar riff puts a chuckle in the belly so you know its going to be amusing. Then after warming the Hip-Hop vibe, around the 9 minute mark Medison drops into this crazy Jersey Club and Juke combo with a DJ Irresistible edit of Trinidad James' “All Gold Everything.” My favorite part of the mix is at the 23:28 mark when we hear the Baaze remix of Yheti's “Crack the Window.” That song is nutty, like exhaling smoke and watching it dissipate out of a cracked car window with that unique and breathy synth line that totally trips you out! 

 Medsion then transitions perfectly to Thrizzo's “Hotter Than Hot” and follows that up with SwaggleRock edit of the Baauer x RL Grime x Nelly's “Infinite Flaps” mashup. That part of the mix is so fun and so weird that it makes Blake Anderson momentarily enter your soul to dance in a bear suit! If you’re searching for something to listen to for that pre-game New Year’s Eve Party, this is an upbeat power hour. Tonight: Capsized! Boat Cruise and Sunset Sunday Launch Party


When the Miss Buffalo II sets off tonight, it will be packed with pumped up partygoers ready to dance. Capsized! Boat Cruise is a biannual danceparty boat cruise that bookends the Summer on Memorial Day Weekend and Labor Day weekend. This event is put on by MNM Presents, and is in my opinion the best and most fun party of the year in Buffalo!

This edition will feature CODES of Slow Roast Records. He is part if the new generation of versatile American house DJs. He tends to mix with great range, sometimes funky, deep, and even poppy. 

Tonight's cruise is SOLD OUT. It usually sells out a week or two before because the Capacity is somewhere under two hundred. Sometimes people find a miracle down at the dock at the last second.

The Drum Machine Report


It is not uncommon for an opener to upstage a headlining act. This is happening more frequently, and when it does it's always kind of funny, or pleasantly surprising! Last Saturday at Duke's, HOOGS played right before   MISTANOIZE on a Bass-centric bill. Though I'm usually impressed with HOOGS, I have to say I was blown away. The Drum and Bass he was playing transported me back to high-school. If you have never checked out his productions, I would strongly encourage you to do so, because that is one guy who by experience is creating underground music correctly.

This weekend, Buffalo will feature a big-name artist from the UK who is a local fan favorite. A little over a year ago, CASPA took the stage at Town Ballroom and showed our people why he is one of the best! After getting rave reviews from the show last year, MNM Presents is bringing him back for round number 2. Fans of dubstep will converge on the Ballroom tomorrow night for this momentous and hopefully annual occasion; let us as fans of EDM show him our appreciation for his music and the culture in general. Tonight: Squeaky Wheel's Peepshow 2013: HOT MESS

Squeaky Wheel and Buffalo Media Resource is a non-profit organization which provides foundational resources for video artists and film makers in our area. Their annual fundraiser party, Peep Show, is a spectacle of art, sound, and music. Tonight at Dnipro Ukrainian Center on Genesee St., you can experience the provocative and sensational installations in a creepily festive atmosphere. This years theme is a hot mess! Yes. Dress-up like a hot mess and you can enter the costume contest for a chance to win tickets to Rhianna at FN Center. 

 To get the feet moving around the big space of Dnipro, Squeaky has on tap some great local music acts. On the main stage will be electronic experimental rock band Cinnamon Aluminum, along with Buffalo Hip-Hop conglomerate KooLiE HiGH, and soulful punk dance band Mallwalkers. MJB Corporation and ABCDJ will be the DJs for the night. We’ve been informed that various installations include the use of music in live performance in congruency with other media. Specifically a video-based live noise decay performance by d011001110110111101100100m, a hand-painted 16mm film to a live soundtrack by Patrick Cain, and "In the Dark II," where Brooklyn-based artist Amanda Nicole Schmidt sings Saves the Day’s Through Being Cool entirely, a cappella, and as the title of the performance indicates, in the dark.

Be impressed by the mess tonight, and go exploring through exploitive exhibits--it will be a stupendous time. Tickets are $15 advanced and $20 at the door. The party goes from 8pm-1am with a VIP pre-party beginning at 6pm. For more information, go Squeaky Wheel’s event page HERE.

The Drum Machine Report


The reviews out of Bass Mountain were all beaming. Many attendees said that they were extremely impressed by the live performance of Shiftee. Many accolades to all of the producers and performers involved.

Recently announced was the return of Caspa to the Town Ballroom on Friday March 8th, which is rapidly approaching. Last year’s show was incredible, and a man of his caliber is not something to miss.

Plenty of things going on this weekend as far as dance music goes. Things kick off tonight with an artist on Mad Decent and one on Deep Medi Musik each at different Allentown venues.

Expect there to be some new faces in the crowd who recently learned about him last year after that opening performance. What's more is that Ryan Hemsworth is equally as exciting to see on this bill. Tonight: Bass Mountain Winter Massive

The place to be tonight will be the Bass Mountain Winter Massive presented by Loki Dnb and which features headliners TERRAVITA and SHIFTEE. The trio of Terravita is comprised of Matt Simmers, Chris Barlow and Jon Spero. They are patriots of American Dubstep and Drum & Bass, and have been flying the flag saliently for the crossover styles that combine the two. This group has helped to popularize Drumstep and Jump-up. Also featured onstage will be another exquisite artist and award winning turntablist, Shiftee. The mathematical musician mixes and makes a Grimey style of bass music and will be a surprise crowd-pleaser for the bewildered. This party is at the perfect spot for the occasional massive dance party. The Ukrainian Center is a beautiful aging edifice with surprising twists and turns and open spaces dotted with traditional iconography. This setting makes for a trippy atmosphere. Previous parties there in the past two years have been very enjoyable. 

When when you get some popular names in and learn from peoples past experiences with how to light and resonate the various spaces in the building, you’re completing the recipe for a barn-burner party. Many regional DJs, producers, and bands, yes there is a live band, will spit-up and sound out in each one of the featured rooms. There will be food and libations available of purchase and also some crazy features including a bounce house and a ball pit! The lights and lasers are going to pre pretty dope as well, and as always most exciting will be the deep pure sound from Tristan’s bassbins and SevenOneSixSound’s setups.

Album of the Week: Jack Topht - That Friggin Boo-Yah Tape


Jack is back, and once again, he spits in the face of convention with his latest work That Friggin Boo-Yah Tape. Released for free on his bandcamp site two weeks ago, the album is a fun fuck-you to normalcy. The Buffalo rapper is a an underground sensation that has made rowdy the best of parties with his freeform artistry of “doing-raps.” When Jack gets on the mic at a party, a case of PBRs gets crushed, and when he’s freestyling a verse outside of the Pink, you stop to listen. 

That Friggin Boo-Yeah Tape is encompassing of these live moments, and is ridden with interesting beats. Many of the beats were done by other Buffalo musicians including on the the opening track “Go Back to Russia.” The beat produced by Mario of UVB-76 centers around a sample of the recognizable clicking sound made by the volume button on Apple devices. This is so hilariously fitting for Jack’s lovable goofball lyrics about dissing some fool and telling them drunken Barney Gumble style to GO BACK TO RUSSIA! 

Unorthodox compositions are accepted and appreciated on this tape. My favorite track is “Big Bag of Funyuns.” The beat on this track was produced by Rouille, and has more of a classic NYC-subway swing. Jack comes in off the intro and lays down a spit-like gab similar to a Danny Brown tirade. Then, the beat rides out and off of the rails.

“I Wanna Live in Your Crotch Girl,” the finale of this controlled chaos, is the summary of Jack Topht’s dirtball swagger. I mean that in a completely complimentary way. You know how wet hipster girls are get when he gets this grimy live. Basically he’s just being real as fuck here, saying that even if you’re pussy’s bloody, we’ll fuck on a towel. It doesn’t get much more real than that yo.

If this kind of gutter-punk rap is too distasteful for you than leave Buffalo. Jack is just being Buffalo. He is mixing the segregated oil and water to make some very flavorful dressing, much like the culture of the Queen City.

The Drum Machine Report


Like the air temperature this winter, the climate of collective consciousness is constantly fluctuating in Buffalo. Us positivists are constantly shielding a barrage of bitterness and negativity grown out of many years of hardship and loss. Alas, we are the weight to balance these ideas, the youthful minds who will soon take over this city and lift it forward into the future! The work of change is never-ending, and only willing will rise up.

With the new year comes new happenings. It is a blessing to have some fresh things going on with a couple of new events happening this Friday. The Drum Machine Report focuses on what events and parties are going on that feature all styles of dance music every weekend in the Queen City. Check out what's happening now:

The Guestbook Party is a fresh party for designed for Buffalonians who love EDM to experience something cutting-edge. The idea is to trend away from the misconstrued ideas of what dance music is currently on Chippewa. Lets face it, Buffalo nightclubs are trashy and stupid by comparison to those in big cities. But we as patrons of these venues, and aficionados of dancefloors are not oblivious to what's new and hot. DJ DSTAR and Promoter Sean Coughlin are wanting to bring a small taste of that big-city flavor to the upstate. DSTAR who is one half of the buzzworthy Solidisco is going to be playing mostly Deep House and NuDisco. Nektar is not the first place you think of for a party, but it should be interesting to see what kind of crowd is drawn in. Check out some of the Solidisco music below through their Soundcloud and hear why they are quickly gaining more attention on the national level.

The Drum Machine Report

Perhaps the best is yet to come. 2013 will be hard pressed to top last year in the number of great shows and events happening in Buffalo.  There is a bleak outlook for what has been announced. Many spring tours that were announced already left Buffalo out of the loop. We'll see. Things seem to work out. Buffalo will continue to trend upward both musically and artistically.

Frosty Tone and Duke's bring you DIRECT FEED tomorrow night. Known by many aliases David Houser has channeled all of his work as a DJ/Producer into Direct Feed. He plays music like Ragga-Jungle and Electro, and he is certainly no stranger to Dubstep. Check out the mix below containing a variety of genres. Many local supporting DJs on the bill, but most notably BETA and BROTHER BEAR both making their return to a Frosty Tone bill.

It may be a new year, but there's more of the same great stuff coming from Culture. Happening on the First Friday of every month, Culture is a party that combines the appreciation of visual art along with the entertainment of music! This week will feature the art of 464 Gallery artists, Marcus Wise and Ryan Mis. Also this is the first weekend that the show Culture will be a stop on the Greater Allentown First Fridays Gallery Walk. This installment of Culture will have music played by BFLO LYDIA, THE OWSKI, and TRAKBENDERS. All of whom will be playing on all vinyl!!! So if you'd rather be all in for some house music come and check out culture.

It helps a little that these two parties are directly across the street from each other. If you like a little flavor from both, it will be easy to hop from joint to joint. Much love.

The Drum Machine Report

The whole world is building up to a climax for another year change. It's going to be 2013! This year there has been too much to remember, not many things we'd like to remember. Many things happened and didn't happen that help us to actualize our own humanity.

The best thing to do at this time of year is to reflect and learn from what has passed, so that we can grow further into the future.

Tonight: The Fourth Annual Saturnalia Festival


Keep the tradition alive tonight at Soundlab as the 4th Annual Saturnalia Festival will take place tonight. Prior to the collapse of the Roman civilization, their people commemorated the winter solstice with a massive orgy and party that celebrated raucous behavior and role-reversal in the honor of the god Saturn. In contemporary Buffalo, this celebration has been a seasonal staple for the lovers of dancing. Tonight's theme features DJ battles with BACEFACE vs. NECKBRACE, MIOSI vs. BROTHER BEAR, SHOOTER MCNAPPIN vs. BUZZ TRILLINGTON, and MARIO BEE vs. STUNTMAN. Admission is just $5 and if you bring a canned food donation for the Bread of Life Food Pantry you will receive one dollar off the price. You can also get one dollar off by wearing a toga! And two dollars if you do both!

The Drum Machine Report

No funny business here. No fueling of the Mayan doomsday prophecy. In actuality, those who did any research on the topic would know that this is just the end of their conceived time cycle, a Baktun, and the beginning of a new one. So take it how you will, but be informed. Waking up on Saturday will be just as fresh as putting on crispy clean underwear after a shower. Once showered and all cleaned up, its time to hit the club for the last nights of dancing and partying for 2012.
