Tonight: Igloo Music presents Cosmos

Tonight there will be lift-off, as Igloo Music presents Cosmos, a space-themed dancing celebration, at Wastelands.

Headlining the event will be Mike Parker, a Buffalo-resident who has performed on a global level.

In the ever-evolving world of genre terminology, Parker coins his stylistic sound as "voodoo techno."

"It's more minimal than other forms of 'club' music," Parker said. "I'm attracted to the abstraction of it and the spaces between the sounds."

In addition to writing music and performing, he is also a teacher at Daemen College and Niagara County Community College where he instructs drawing and print making. Art, in any form of medium, is an inclusive form that relates back into everything he does.

"Everything I do visually ties in because I'm always thinking about music and the way I present it," Parker said. He designs and prints the record jackets for his label, Geophone, which he started in 1997 to release his music with a more involved and personal creative direction.

He became enveloped in the life when he was just a teenager. "I bought my first synthesizer, a KORG Mono/Poly, when I was in high school. I've been addicted ever since."

"I've played in many countries across Europe in the past few years. Also, my performances in Japan have been a creative inspiration for me. It's such a beautiful country. I recently contributed an ambient track to a CD compilation called Composure. This compilation, by various artists, was made to raise relief money for victims of the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan in 2011," Parker said.

Among many aspiring and growing artists in the Queen City some have a confident hope and diligence toward the Buffalo music scene, whereas some are struck by wanderlust and feel a career is only manageable elsewhere. For a DJ and producer who has traveled to the Land of the Rising Sun, across the U.S., Europe and more, why remain in the 716?

"My teaching career, affordable living, the art scene, and my friends," he said.

Mike Parker loves music because, "It's the most abstract of all art forms. And it helps chase away the blues."

In addition, Diskomaster will be hailing in from Syracuse. Igloo's Paul Kuenzi, and birthday boy, will also be performing, along with Gene Linet, J.P. Freedom and Ryan Liddell.

A costume contest will commence, so dress your best. C.P. Abbott Photography will be there to capture the madness.

New Year's Eve Preview: Igloo Presents Reanimate

At buffaBLOG, we don't often preview events so early, but New Year's Eve takes forward-thinking and pre-planning. Igloo music will present another progressive party, bigger and more complex than the last.

Reanimate is a party that encompasses what New Year's is all about. The adage "auld lang syne" (meaning: times long past) is the foundation of the holiday's M.O. What happened in the past year has come and gone; it is time to start anew. Let the troubles of 2013 stay there and relinquish ourselves from the baggage we've been carrying. It's time to reanimate who we are, what we want and where we're going.

The multi-room, multi-genre party will take place in a three-story warehouse, and from 10 p.m. until 7 a.m. three rooms will feature various DJs and worlds of sound.

Hailing from Toronto will be Mix Chopin. He started playing piano when he was five years old and he said it has been consistent progression ever since. "I got into DJing after I heard Daft Punk, and it was really a life-changer for me. I was really young and was like, who are these robots? And I really wanted to do what they do because I wanted to be a robot, right?" he said with a laugh. Fascinated with mixing, beat-matching and collecting records and CDs, he began professionally DJing by age 19 at clubs.

Mix Chopin's influential artists include the sounds of The Chemical Brothers, Prodigy and Justice. He said specifically Justice, clad in their leather jackets, was a "huge influence. When I was a teenager they came out and blew my mind."

Without sub-genre attachments, he said his style falls under electronic and house. In a more refined sense, he said "Nu-disco, along those lines. It's hard to put a finger on it because there's so much stuff out there in the world of electronic music. I like to experiment with it all, but it still somehow goes back to the funk and groove.

"I love DJing, it gives me a certain feeling." Currently, he said he has been producing and collaborating with vocalists and experimenting with live performance; a blend of band and DJ. With "live musicians on top, sprinkling percussion ... it adds a whole new element and the energy goes up so much more. It's been received pretty well, I would say. I hope to do it more, and take it on the road. And keep that vibe going."

Reanimate will not be Mix Chopin's first time performing in Buffalo. "I got booked for a show at Soundlab," through Rick Vallone, who brought him back again last year to Duke's Bohemian Grove Bar. "I love Buffalo a lot," he said. A friendship was formed between the Toronto DJ and John Sullivan, currently an Igloo crew member, who is deeply involved in the process of Reanimate. "Sully was even saying how big of project it was for him," Mix Chopin said. "So it's cool to be a part of. I'm just super excited to come up and play the gig."

While Canada and the United States differ on many things (i.e. hockey fans, money, distance measurement, etc.), the Canadian scene versus the American scene differs slightly. From Mix Chopin's perspective, "There's a little bit of a difference ... every time I come down [to Buffalo] it's really warm. I like the crowds. Toronto's a little oversaturated sometimes." He said there is so much music within Toronto's city limits, that the intimacy of an event isn't as strong as the U.S. "There's a different vibe. The crowds are always really awesome [in America]," he said.

The two countries also vary in the pronunciation of Mix Chopin. The French influences of Canada have some pronounce Chopin like the famous composer Frédéric Chopin, while Americans will harden the word ("chop" + "in"); he said the confusion entertains him. "That was the whole point of the name. People are going to be so confused. It's going to be awesome." His actual name is Mick Match, which he said "is a pretty cool stage name already," but was difficult for Google searching.

His recent release "Never Let Go" is available for listen on SoundCloud. "It's just a little bit deeper and there's vocals on it. It's kind of a different twist," he said.

Often with inspiration comes the move. Neil Kryszak – after his upcoming release will be known as Kryss – is a Buffalo native. He moved to Bushwick, a working-class neighborhood in Brooklyn. "I kind of felt like I was boxed in. I love Buffalo but I had to leave because I needed some more influence." With a few opportunities to work in New York City, he made the move and stayed for the past four years, until he felt the urge to travel again and moved to California, where he is now currently based in Los Angeles. "I like warm weather, it's more inspiring," he said. "I didn't expect to actually move out here.

"My world got a little too small [in Buffalo], but then the same thing happened again in Brooklyn. It can happen wherever you are, which is why I want to keep traveling."

Kryszak was raised playing different types of instruments, mainly drums. His father is a silent film composer and as a child Kryszak's toys were the orchestral instruments in his father's studio. He said he considers himself more of a music producer, that the DJing aspect is something that comes along with being in love with music. "I like to share everything good that I find," he said. Performing random gigs here and there, he said he has never played a show in Buffalo before.

So far he has released various singles on SoundCloud and Bandcamp. Currently, he is setting up a recording studio in LA, and also working on a score for a BBC documentary about the osprey bird species. His own album release is projected for spring 2014. "That will be my first major release and will have a lot of songs," he said about his self-released album.

In addition to his musician friends, Kyrszak said that Shigeto and Machinedrum are his two main influences; "Shigeto does basically my dream set-up of what I've always wanted to do. It's ambient mixed in with beats and percussion." Kryszak stated his own productions can be described as "visual and ambient electronic music" always with a jazz influence.

"I've been friends with John [Sullivan] for a long time ... but I moved when Queen City Cartel started to do a lot of these shows. I've been watching from afar and noticed the music scene getting bigger and better," he said. "John asked me to play [Reanimate] ... thought I'd be good for the Magic Carpet Room."

Tonight: Helix

Club Phenomenology is the brainchild of Sean Feiner and Nick States, and they're striving for The Future with an eye on the past.
In association are Kyle Tatum and Brian Doyle (the duo that comprise Eyes Everywhere).

Tonight, they are bringing the Night Slugs label to Western New York for the first time as Helix takes over The Wastelands. Night Slugs is the label who brought artists like Bok Bok, Mosca and Girl Unit to the surface. The bass and techno Atlanta native Helix, will be supported by Eyes Everywhere, Paul Kuenzi, Nicky Fowler and Mascone Lee. There will also be art by LOLNEWMEDIA.

"The event aims to bring together music and art as well as the community," Doyle said. The Club Phenomenology crew is planning to start a free-release label called Cool Dad Records and, as they said, "want to continue throwing parties aimed at bringing together everyone in the scene in a place free of judgment or prejudice." In other words, #PLUR.

Infected Mushroom is performing tonight at Town Ballroom; with the Wastelands located across the way from the venue, consider it a pregame or after-party spot. For those who plan on just getting weird without Mushroom, see you at the Wastelands.

Just Announced: The Christmas Party 2013

The Christmas Party. In the years I have lived in Buffalo, each year I would pack my suitcase, shut down my dorm room or apartment, and head home to Syracuse for the holiday season. I would return and hear every single one of my friends talk about "The Christmas Party," although never in full-detail. This party, in my eyes, became a wintertime enigma.

While my school books are collecting dust in my closet, I have entered the real world. Although I will miss my month long vacation from responsibilities, and this year I'll have to wake up at the crack of dawn on Dec. 26 to head to my day job, I am ecstatic that The Christmas Party is an experience I will finally have.

What seems to be the most wild holiday party of the year has just been announced by MNM Presents for 2013.

The lineup:
Notixx
DJ 3P0
SwaggleRock
Hoogs with MC Braka D
Paul Kuenzi // Brandon Chase
Oonah Slim
Jesse Aaron
Criminal Sound

Zamboni Driver
+ one more to be announced.

It is a multi-room event that takes place on three floors of the building: the Main Room, Bass Patio, House Room (hosted by Igloo Music) and First Floor Lounge. Also, there is an open bar from 10 – 11 p.m.

Tonight: The Best of Drum & Bass Tour 2013 feat. AK1200 & Dara

Tonight, two of the most prolific Drum and Bass DJs will team up for a show of epic proportions at the Town Ballroom. Thirteen years ago, AK1200 (Dave Minner) and Dara (Darragh Guilfoyle) joined forces with Dieselboy and MC Messinian to make the DnB supergroup Planet of the Drums. The idea was to earn respect for the style and to move Drum and Bass to the main stage. In 2009, Planet of the Drums went on their 10th anniversary tour, and was determined to be the longest-running annual national Electronic Dance Music tour ever. Then in 2010, they switched to one-off shows and appearances at major festivals, but the legacy of that journey lives on. AK1200 and Dara have embarked on this current tour to keep that dream alive.

The Town Ballroom is prepped for an influx of junglists and fans coming out of the woodwork to resurrect the relics of a music that has thankfully remained underground and in our hearts.

In lieu of diversity for musical preferences, tonight's party features another room focusing on a mixture of other Dance music styles. The show boasts a late cutoff time, a rarity for the Ballroom. Many other very talented artists will be playing in support including DJ Flex of Rochester, Alpha Flight Krew of Fort Erie, and Paul Kuenzi of Buffalo.

For a full list of the artists and set times, visit the Facebook event page HERE. The event is All Ages. Tickets are $20 pre-sale and $25 at the door. Show time is 9pm-2am. This event is presented by Buffalo DnB and La Selva in association with MNM Presents.

The Drum Machine Report

It is not uncommon for an opener to upstage a headlining act. This is happening more frequently, and when it does it's always kind of funny, or pleasantly surprising! Last Saturday at Duke's, HOOGS played right before   MISTANOIZE on a Bass-centric bill. Though I'm usually impressed with HOOGS, I have to say I was blown away. The Drum and Bass he was playing transported me back to high-school. If you have never checked out his productions, I would strongly encourage you to do so, because that is one guy who by experience is creating underground music correctly.

This weekend, Buffalo will feature a big-name artist from the UK who is a local fan favorite. A little over a year ago, CASPA took the stage at Town Ballroom and showed our people why he is one of the best! After getting rave reviews from the show last year, MNM Presents is bringing him back for round number 2. Fans of dubstep will converge on the Ballroom tomorrow night for this momentous and hopefully annual occasion; let us as fans of EDM show him our appreciation for his music and the culture in general. For more information and the other events going on this weekend, carry on.

Now the Igloo crew will migrate down Elmwood to a very classy place in Nektar. Still the same mature vibes and deep house sounds. this week will feature back-to-back sets from 3PO&RYAN LIDELL, BRANDON CHASE&PAUL KUENZI, and GREG HOWZE&LALKA.

Party safely and responsibly. Much Love!

Tonight: Technocracy

A very special treat will be taking place this evening at Broadway Joe's. Igloo music presents: Technocracy. Headlining this dark beat event will be none other than Buffalo's own, Mike Parker.

Parker both an educator in the visual arts, in which he lectures fine art at the University at Buffalo, makes delicious beats for your listening pleasure. He has years of fine tuning his craft and countless EP's (18 to be exact), including an album and a compilation disc with electronic avant-pop artist, Matthew Dear. Releasing his efforts on both his own label, Geophone, and popular German label, Prologue, Mike Parker has become an artistic specimen. Parker, has played gigs all over the world including a recent mini tour hitting the likes of Berlin, Budapest and London.

People attending tonights gig should expect some hard hitting techno/house accompanied by dark and extra deep beats. Also on the bill are Buffalo favorites:

The show again is at Broadway Joe's with things getting started around 10pm, entry fee is $5 and is an 18 and over event.

The Drum Machine Report

Once more unto the breach dear friends! A new month and a new outlook for what may be in Buffalo before the years end. We're reaching the climax of 2012 and shit is getting crazy. Sandy is/was not just a super storm, it is completely unprecedented in magnitude! Centuries go by without a storm like this. Its becoming harder not to listen to the quacks talking about weather modification and project stormfury. At least we know America will come together in a crisis by BOOing the realists like this poor brah who just wanted to tell Rombrah about global climate change:

When will those hippies learn that a USA chant trumps anything!? Even if humanity is breaching Mother Earth's slit and is about to get bitch slapped even further...I'm gonna live everyday gratefully and enjoy each breath I have been granted. Along the way let's enjoy ourselves in the gifts of the gods such as music and libations, accessible again this weekend in our fair city.

NuSkool Pirates throws down another three room party at Dingen's this Saturday night. The line up is chock full of Buffalo and Rochester DJs geared up to help you lose your mind and dance the night away. Sets by HOOGS, BIG BASHA, and PAUL KUENZI will highlight this high octane affair. Make sure to check out the visuals as well provided by VJ Deliria. Her projections this year have been top-notch artistry. It's important to appreciate the details, even at the rave party. One set I'll be looking forward to will be SITA! Check out his most recent Electro House mix below.

Like I said, get it while its good, life that is, we're still a long ways off reverting to survival mode. I hope. Much Love!

The Drum Machine Report

The City of No Illusions shall hide no defect. We are rusty, we are tried. Thus is the nature of Buffalo. That is no reason for those who depart, to do so with such acrimony in their hearts. Be grateful of the thickened skin you’ve attained from braving the economic and social setbacks of our fair City. Everyone who lives here, be it briefly or lifetime, is somehow positively changed by compulsory growth of character.

One thing that I am grateful for is the plethora of local talented musicians here. Be it Bands, DJs, or Do-It Yourselfers there is plenty going on in our music scene on any given night. Thats part of what buffaBLOG is all about, bringing those facts and our opinions to you, our readers.

With this weekly post, the Drum Machine Report, I can only hope to tell you about the Dance Parties and Shindigs that are going on any given week, and to help expose the local Artists, Musicians, Promoters, and the Businesses involved. Many of whom are very talented and gracious individuals.

We’ve truly reached the dog days of summer, and when humans start to act like dogs they get goofy and itchy. Salt & Pepa kick off an energetic weekend of music at the harbor tonight, and theres some interesting things going on in the Dance music scene at some cool venues. Take a look below:

Heading up to North Buffalo on Friday night? The Sidebar will be a cool hangout as it usually is, but on this night will be bumpin' with performances from some local Buffalo DJs. Three of which I've never heard of before DJ ZONG, who has a hilarious name, and ALEX VLUAJ and BRANDON VULAJ, whom I can only assume are brothers. Also taking the vibe to many different places will be three performers that are on fire right now, RUFUS GIBSON, MIOSI, and PAUL KEUNZI. Check out some of their recent stuff below. Saturday head to the Hertel strip to see it live and in a cool setting.

On Saturday check out the sheik vibe going on over at Buffalo's off-the-radar nightclub Sinful. The EVOLve party picks up again this weekend and is taking place after a Fashion Show presented by the venue earlier that evening. Swank. Something that I have been hopefully anticipating is seemingly coming to fruition here in Buffalo. That is a movement of nightclub owners to reserve nights for the "Not Top-40" Dance scene, and what's more is that it's at a club not on Chippewa st. A nightclub where one can enjoy a clean vodka drink on a couch fancier than their pants. Similarly to Rendezvous, this club has a compacted big-city feel. Another thing I have been anticipating is the return of OONASLIM to Buffalo! Oona has traveled all over the world perfecting her crafts of DJ and artistry. In performance, she fingers through different music as though she was tickling the listeners pineal gland. Taking her audience to nearly hallucinogenic heights and creating danceable dimensions unknown to the human mind. She is not to be missed, and in a posh nightclub it will be interesting to see how the music and listener evolve together. In support will be DJs JUST DUBBS, PAUL KUENZI, CHRISTIAN DHARMA, and GENE LINET. Listen below to the mix Oona did for Beatport earlier this year.

For those who want some Bass music with substance you should check out Frosty Tone's new Saturday ting over at Ohm Ultra Lounge on the corner of Allen and Main. The crew at Frosty Tone is rolling out the OG vibe and in a new home. The Ultra Lounge has a club like feel with a seedy kind of film over everything; a negative that is accepted for the savvy Buffalo night lovers. Expect a healthy mix of Dubstep, Drum n Bass, and House from TEMPERS ROUGE, DROP D, NECKBRACE, DA BUTCHA, DEMI GOD, PERCEPTOR, LOKI, and BIG BASHA.

Happy Trails Buffalo, enjoy yourselves safely this weekend. Much Love.
