Tonight: Marco Benevento

It's been almost six months since Marco Benevento played Nietzsche's and I couldn't be more excited for tonight's show! Being a long time fan of the Benevento Russo duo and every other band Marco has been a part of, I would be happy to watch him every single weekend.  Marco is on tour supporting his newest release, Tigerface, which was a new refreshing sound for Benevento, including a few tracks that featured vocals.

If you have never heard of him then tonight is the perfect opportunity to witness a true talent in the jazz and experimental genres. The genius behind his sound is in his ability to twist the sounds of a real live piano to give you a range of electronic dance to a gritty piano solo.  I personally can't get enough of his piano soloing, especially found on the track "Do What She Told You" off his newest album. The show starts at 10 pm tonight, with supporting local acts Family Funktion & the Sitar Jams and Universe Shark Trio, presale tickets were $12 and it looks like you can still buy some here. SEE YOU THERE! (Rochester fans he is headed your way tomorrow night)

Know Your Opener: Royal Teeth

Hopefully you've been checking your email inbox and received the Town Ballroom's generous free ticket offer for tonight's show featuring Young Empires. I'm writing to inform you not to miss the opener! Sometimes I look back at shows I've been to and realize that the opening band is now headliners who don't stop in Buffalo and charge $50 a ticket..... and I would love to see them. Don't let this happen to you. Tonight's opener is Royal Teeth, a New Orleans (happy Carnival!) based indie band that has an electronica feel with pulsating drums and both male and female vocals. Their debut EP, Act Natually, was released last year and features five upbeat and danceable tracks that you will definitely hear tonight. One of the best things about new bands other than their overwhelming dedication to their new careers is FREE MUSIC!! You can grab a free download of their track "Wild" on their bandcamp page! yay! The Royal Teeth's presence in the music world seems to be on a giant incline and will only improve with their upcoming release of their full LP.  So don't be late tonight! Doors are at 7 pm, if you didn't receive the Town Ballroom's free ticket then you can buy one at the door for $14. See you there!

buffaBLOG's 12 Days of Christmas: Day 9 - Fiona Apple

You may have already heard this Christmas song somewhere in your holiday shopping or maybe even today when you run out last minute because you slacked to get your gifts. Fiona Apple had an awesome year for music with her newest album being released and a major tour. I've been listening to this song a lot while getting ready for this weeks festivities. Enjoy!

Tonight: Jeff Bujak

Hopefully, you've had a chance to see Jeff Bujak perform live by now since he gets to come to Buffalo pretty often... if not... tonight's the night.  Jeff Bujak is an electronica producer who uses several keyboards and effect pedals to create an inventive and energetic sound.  He is a one man live electronic act that is too much fun to pass up. If you aren't entertained enough by observing his musical abilities, his light set up will definitely tickle your fancy. Also new to his show is Jen Dulong, a hula hooper from what the image above looks like has several glowing hula hoops that she dances with on stage. It honestly looks like a ton of fun. Local support tonight will come from the now three piece Early Attic, who will be debuting some new music and closing the night will be some sets from The Late Night Owl DJs.  The show starts at 10 pm sharp and there is a $5 cover.

Tonight: Marco Benevento

Marco Benevento returns to Buffalo tonight for another amazing night of music. It wasn't too long ago when Marco took the stage at Nietzsches and put on one of my favorite shows all year! His newest album, Tigerface, was released earlier this month and thankfully we get the opportunity to see him perform some of these songs on his tour.  Tigerface featured an amazing cast of musicians to help him create his masterpiece, including Mike Gordon of Phish who he toured with for while as part of the Benevento Russo Duo and G.R.A.B.  The album also featured vocals for the first time on a few tracks with the help of Kalmia Traver of Rubblebucket. I've been a fan of Marco Benevento for at least a decade and have faithfully followed his career (including an impromptu trip to NYC to see him perform on New Years Eve with Surprise Me Mr. Davis!).... yea so I'm excited. Except some fantastic originals, as well as some inventive covers and a great night of music! Door are at 7 pm, the Mike Dillon Band opens, $15 cover.

Tonight: Turkuaz

The nine piece Brooklyn funk band known as Turkuaz stops by Soundlab tonight for an explosive night of music. Widely popular in Brooklyn and NYC, they have several nationwide tours under their belt and two independently released full length albums.  Just by looking at their instrumentation line up, its obvious this band means business.  Three horn players and two female vocals are all I need to know about this band to decide I will not miss the show.  After listening to a few tracks on their website, I can't wait to see them live.  Its definitely loud and fun, which is perfect as an after show to the Mighty Mighty Bosstones show at the harbor.  The doors of Soundlab open at 9 pm and its only $5 if you bring a flier from the harbor show or are still wearing your bracelet ($10 if you didn't go to the harbor). See you there!

Buffalo Infringement Festival: Day 10

Well its super hot outside today so as soon it starts cooling down a bit do not miss all the stuff going on tonight! We only have one day left so its extra important you make it to these shows!!!!!

Tonight at McCarthy's Pub on Hamburg Street, we have buffaBLOG favs Andrew J Reimer's Country Punk Extravaganza, singer-songwriter Shane Hall, and The Merchants. The show goes from 7-10:30.

For more musical experiences, theres a Meaty Music Masquerade Ball going on at Broadway Joe's from 9 - 1:30 featuring Cavalcade, Noah Gokey and the Skulls, The Moves, Maybe The Welders and The We Couldn't Afford The Bootsy Collins All Star Project. The last one sounds extra fun with their description on the infringement website consisting of: "These gentleman (term used loosely) will improvise a song in every key of Western Music (excluding sharps/flats) with a subject corresponding to that key, as suggested by the audience."

If you are the costume wearing mood (which should be always) then dress up like an alien or space traveler for a sci-fi night at Nietzsches.  As always, there will be a terrific line up of bands with a Sci-Fi theme to the night.  Its only $3 to get in if you wear a costume.  Make sure you are there for Scantron!!!!

Pick one of these events and mix it in with some Hoopnosis at Day's Park (9pm) and you are all set to infringe away!

buffaBLOG Broadway Market Rooftop Extravaganza Artist Spotlight: Handsome Jack

There is no shortage of Handsome Jack on buffaBLOG. We've been updating you on their shows and new releases since we started this thing so its only appropriate we finally get them on the bill for one of our shows! This Saturday, Handsome Jack to will take the stage on the rooftop of the Broadway Market along with some of our other favorite local bands. To add to the excitement, they will be performing an acoustic set which which will force them to reinvent their sound a bit making this show an extra special experience.

Handsome Jack is known for their southern gritty rock sound.  They started as a simple blues rock garage band a few years ago and since then have successful grown and developed their sound. Clever song writing and obvious musical talent makes this band easily one of my favorite local acts to see live. Hopefully the rain will hold out for us on Saturday and we can all enjoy Handsome Jack while getting a tan on the roof (the party still happens if it rains, it just takes place on the second floor of the Broadway Market). The event starts at 1:00 pm (facebook invite).

Tonight: Ingrid Michaelson

Indie pop singer songwriter Ingrid Michaelson stops by the Town Ballroom tonight to entertain us on this gray rainy day.  If you aren't familiar with her work, you would definitely recognize her song "The Way I am" that was featured in a popular Old Navy commercial years ago. She has successfully released five albums, including one this past year titled Human Again that reached the number 1 spot on the indie charts and number 5 overall.  Her music has an overall pleasant tone that will attract any music fan.  The list of TV shows, commercials and movies that have featured her music is one of the most impressive lists I've seen. The show is at Town Ballroom tonight and starts at 7 pm.  Yesterday they announced there were only 20 tickets left so if you don't have yours, you may be out of luck. Tickets are $24 at the door.  Also, do not miss opening act Greg Laswell! He is super talented. Have fun!

Camp Bisco XI: El Ten Eleven

I am constantly using Pandora radio in the office while work and sometimes a song comes along that captures my attention enough to find out who it is.  This is has happened several times with the band El Ten Eleven. The band is only composed of two members, bassist Kristian Dunn and drummer Tim Fogarty, but their sound is much larger. They are known for their skillful looping of guitar and bass over drumming which we have seen done before but they have a real talent at composition.  The duo has produced four full length albums and their fifth is releasing later this year. Their music is very universal in style and can appeal to almost all music fans. According to their show dates you can catch these guys live on Saturday at Camp Bisco. It will be a perfect soundtrack to the conclusion of your trip.

Tonight: Ida Blue

Join New York City's hottest stride and blues trio for their first performance in Western New York. Buffalo-bred trombonist Dan Reitz will appear alongside vocalist Mara Kaye and pianist Dalton Ridenhour for a night of raunchy blues and time-worn standards. Although he was born and raised in Buffalo, Dan Reitz packed up his trombone and headed to NYC a few years ago.  He often travels back in town to play with his local band Ramforinkus... but this time he brought his stride and blues band, Ida Blue, to entertain us. Ida Blue is a highly unique and talented band... you shouldn't miss this amazing opportunity to see them perform at Nietzsche's tonight.  If you have ever been a fan of old time standards or a classic blues sound, then this band is for you.  I've listened to a few of their recordings and I personally cannot wait to see how they transform in a live setting.  The show starts at 9 pm and there is no cover!

Tonight: Orgone

There are 10 members in the funk band Orgone... which is just enough to make Nietzsche's insanely funky and fun tonight.  Trust me, its the place to be tonight.  I saw these guys (and girl) perform at Mountain Jam last summer so obviously you can trust my opinion. The band started in LA around 1999 and existed mostly as hip hop backing bands.  They then released an album in 2001 and added vocalist Fanny Franklin.  Along with performing originals, they are also known to pull out old school funk covers of "Funky Nassau" and Issac Haye's "Do You Thing". They also toured as the opening band of one of my favorite acts right now, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings.  So yea... its funky tonight at knee cheese.  Don't miss it.

Live at Larkin Square

Have you heard whats happening to Larkin Square? The whole area got a majored face lift with a boardwalk, new restaurants, a market place, and a live local music series every Wednesday!! It all kicks off today with the Hot Club of Buffalo and After Hours.  Two local bands definitely worth checking out and whose cheerful music perfectly fit the evening.  So heres how your evening can go: you get out of your remarkably easy, fast day of work, pick up your friend of choice, drive down Seneca Street past Chef's restaurant just a little bit and arrive at the beautiful Larkin Square where you eat a sandwich at Square One Sandwiches in the airstream camper... or maybe grab a hot dog at The Grill. You check out the smooth gypsy swing music of Hot Club of Buffalo (featuring members of Babik and Djambossa), maybe do some dancing. Grab some of the awesome ice cream by Lake Effect Ice Cream (I heard they have a banana pancake flavor) and eat it on one of the comfy chairs scattered around the square. Enjoy the drive home while the sun is setting. Sound good?

If you can't make it this week, you don't have to worry because it will be happening every wednesday until Sept 19th (including a buffaBLOG night on September 12th!!). Did I mention they have pickleball courts too?

Just Announced: Fiona Apple

Fiona Apple's newest album The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than The Driver of The Screw And Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do is released tomorrow and just in time for her to announce more tour dates... including BUFFALO! I saw Fiona perform several years ago with Nickel Creek in Rochester and to this day it is still one of my favorite concerts ever.  Tomorrow, I'm catching her opening night of her tour in Ithaca (bought the tickets thinking there would never be a chance to see her in Buffalo.... obviously wrong). The show is at Kleinhans which makes this news even better! The show is set to be Tuesday, October 9th and tickets go on sale Friday 6/22 at 9am!

Tonight: Fitz and the Tantrums

Its the second week of the Thursday in the Harbor season and it might be my favorite line up! Last year, Fitz and the Tantrums opened for Grace Potter & the Nocturnals and they tore it up. This band is funky as hell and will be putting on a terrific show tonight.  Also playing tonight is Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds... a band I first saw at the Tralf last year.  They are a Brooklyn based blues-soul-funk fusion band with a total of nine members! Eight guys and one lone female named Arleigh Kincheloe who is a true powerhouse performer. And as always... its FREE!!  The weather is perfect so hop the train, grab a beer and enjoy the show tonight!

Camp Bisco XI Artist Spotlight - Kung Fu

Every year at Camp Bisco there is a hidden funk band to mix things up with all the electronic sounds you hear. Last year, we got down to Lettuce and this year it will be the one and only Kung Fu. You may not have ever heard of the band Kung Fu but you may have heard of some of the bands these musicians come from. Kung Fu is Tim Palmieri (The Breakfast - guitar) Todd Stoops (raq - keys) Dave Livolsi (Scofield/Jazz is Dead - bass) Rob Somerville (Deep Banana Blackout - sax) Adrian Tramantono (The Breakfast - drums).  I first saw them perform together in this supergroup last summer at Mountain Jam and was thrilled with what I heard.  The music is almost entirely instrumental with some scattered vocal parts.  Every musician in this band is extremely talented and will provide the crowd with some earth shattering funk music. Super funky and super good.  Do not miss them! I repeat.... DO NOT MISS THEM. I'll be up front dancing!

Album of the Week: Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros - Here

I was a huge fan of the first Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zero's debut album Up from Below, so I was super excited to hear their second album Here.  It was released last Tuesday and overall, I was not disappointed by their second attempt.  At first listen, the whole album sounds like it was written on a train in a completely different era.... its definitely not the most musically progressive album of the year. One thing this album does right is continue to perfect that happy, hippie, chill vibe the band is all about.  I don't think they've written another epic indie hit like "Home", but there are definitely some highlights on the album.  Opening track "Man on Fire" is easily my favorite on the album and is very reminiscent of an old Johnny Cash tune. The album was released with perfect timing for summer and I know I'll be listening to it for the next few months.

Picking Up the Slack for MTV: Milo Greene

Sometimes all you need is a few instruments and a cave to make a great music video.  That's exactly what up and coming indie band Milo Greene did for their video for the song "1957". The band teamed up with In The Open, a music blog that films sessions with local bands just like the one you will see below.  Its beautiful and really captures the raw talent of the band.  Don't forget to keep your night free on August 1st so you can see this band live at Mohawk Place at the After Dark and buffaBLOG Block Party!
