Sonic Youth is dead. The partnership between Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon was the astounding creative impetus behind the experimental alt-rock behemoth. Upon ending, it brought the three decade-long career of one of America's great bands to a close. Fortunately, two new acts have quickly sprouted above Sonic Youth's grave: Gordon's Body/Head and Moore's Chelsea Light Moving. The latter are performing tonight at the Tralf Music Hall. Doors open at 7pm and tickets are only $15.
Every bit as challenging and wild as Sonic Youth, Chelsea Light Moving are at times reminiscient of a garage-punk reworking of the Velvet Underground. They can be seen onstage alongside Speedy Ortiz this evening, presenting striking evidence of Moore's continued relevance in the indie world.

While Sonic Youth are currently on one of those "indefinite hiatuses," those looking to catch members of the band in Buffalo are in luck. Thurston Moore's current project Chelsea Light Moving will be in town in mid September, and it was just announced that founding member Lee Ranaldo will bring his band, The Dust, to the Tralf on Wednesday, October 9th. Ranaldo is touring to support his upcoming yet to be titled album, which is set to be dropped in September. Along with The Dust, the influential alt-rocker was a part of one of my favorite concerts of last summer, opening for Wilco in Rochester, but if you missed him then, you can save yourself the trip this time around at a shockingly low price.
