Three of punk rock's most exciting and talked about bands will be hitting Young Dundas Square in Toronto tonight as part of the NXNE festival, Toronto's answer to Austin's SXSW.
Following the release of their critically acclaimed David Comes to Life, buzz band Fucked Up will hit the stage first at 8pm. "Rock Opera" is not a term loosely thrown around by a hardcore punk band but Fucked Up has never played by the rules. Their uniquely melodic and layered sound has set them apart from the milieu of hardcore bands today and has made them one of the most talked about band's on the scene today.
Off!, fronted by legendary vocalist Keith Morris, will hit the stage immediately after at 9pm with their brand of pissed off and amped up punk rock. Picture Black Flag and the Circle Jerks (Morris' famed 80's outfit) having a baby then filter that lense within the context of the current social and political climate. Live this band is explosive, as evidenced by their annihilation of Mohawk Place a few monthes back. A definite must-see for fans of early southern California punk rock.
The night will close out with punk pioneers and legends, the Descendents. This is exciting news considering the band rarely tours and hasn't played in the east coast in some time. Considered by many to be the innovators of pop-punk, the band has released very little material in the past several years, but continues to gain notoriety for their enthusiastic shows and set lists that span their entire career. A rare treat for punk fans, tonight promises to deliver in Spades. They will hit the stage at 10pm.
