For many alt/indie rock fan in their late 20's and early 30's, Weezer's first two albums, 1994's Weezer (Blue Album), and 1996's Pinkerton, hold a special place in their heart. In addition to Green Day's Dookie, Weezer was one of the first CDs I remember owning. Between the radio ready power pop tracks in addition to the great accompanying music videos, the album rarely left my Walkman(Yes, I am old). Pinkerton, though, was something different entirely. The album, which may have inadvertently started the modern day emo genre(thanks alot Weezer!), was just re-released as a deluxe edition late last year. Originally rejected by most critics, Pinketon was a dark collection of songs that where raw, creepy, juvenile, and vulnerable that was one of the best albums of the decade, certainly the best of the band's career. Since then, I don't know what Weezer is doing or thinking. Outside of "Dope Nose" off their Malodroit album, there has not been a single Weezer song that has not made me change the channel upon immediate recognition. Between songs that I can not tell if are intended to be a joke or not to weird/random album artwork to horrific covers, the band seems to have become a caricature of itself and unfortunately, there seems to be no end in sight. Sorry Weezer fans.
This week, Weezer announced their latest project, which is naturally, a Weezer Cruise. While all information on the cruise can be found at their website, the cruise runs from January 19th-23rd from Miami to Cozumel. In what may be a Weezer fan's wet dream, the 4 night trip, which costs roughly $1000(plus flight if need be), includes multiple Weezer performances, personal photos with the band, and a Q&A session. While not a Weezer fan anymore, I can not help but be impressed with the bands who will also be performing on the cruise. 90's alt-rock heroes Dinosaur Jr., beach-punkers Wavves, 90's alt-rock throw backs Yuck, and retro power poppers Free Energy(who owe a certain amount of debt to the band themselves) and more will be playing the cruise. While the thought of having to hear a live rendition of "Island in the Sun" while stuck on open water is enough to give me nightmares, I give the band props for putting together a solid lineup around them.
