Uncovered Cover: Everyone covers Nirvana

One of the best shows from this years Bonnaroo, and this entire summer for that matter, would have to be Deer Tick's surprise, late night, balls-to-the-wall set of Nirvana covers. Since that night we've found a new appreciation for the 90's grunge kings we didn't even know we had. As it turns out, we're not the only ones who are having a Nirvana love affair. Just the other day SPIN magazine released a free download of 13 Nirvana covers by most of our favorite musicians (although no Deer Tick) in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the band's breakthrough album, Nevermind. Some of these artists (Surfer Blood, Titus Andronicus, JEFF the Brotherhood) feel right at home covering the Seattle rock gods, while others (Fozy Shazam, Midnight Juggernauts) add their own electronic glam touch to the classics. This is a great album that manages to do a very rare thing when it comes cover albums. Pleasing old school fans while creating new ones.
