Album of the Week: Bryan Johnson & Family - Self Titled EP

We are slowly approaching, although never slow enough, that dreaded period here in Buffalo that only means one thing:  winter is coming.  I know it's still August, but whenever football starts to be played,  summer feels just about over to me.  I never thought I would long for that two week period of 90+ degree weather we had last month, but if it's between that and the never too far away frigid months that unfortunately define our city, I will take the insufferable heat any day of the week.  Good summer music, though, can help keep the spirit of these great months alive well into the fall.  While my favorite "summer sounding" band Real Estate(sadly, Cap'n Geech & The Shrimp Shack Shooters are not real) does not release their next album until October,  we here at buffaBLOG found a our own boys of summer (I groaned as I wrote that, but I could not help myself).

Bryan Johnson & Family, fresh off playing last week at Nietzsche's, have been emailing their self titled EP to anyone who wants it, via their facebook page.  We got our own back at the end of July and have not stopped enjoying it since, making them one of our favorite new local bands of the year.  Lead singer Bryan Johnson sings with soft, youthful vocals that don't sound too far off of Surfer Blood singer John Paul Pitts.  In fact, Surfer Blood is a good comparison to run with, once the reverb is stripped away.  Their easy going, surf pop melodies flow in and out, like the best summer days.  The crunchy 90s alt rock chords of "Beaches" and EP stand out "Deck Party" remind us of being young and carefree, before you start taking life way to0 seriously.  This short, but sweet EP is required listening as we attempt to hold on the last days of another great Buffalo summer.
