The Mordaunt Sisters have been kicking around Buffalo for some time now, sharing stages with some of the city's best and most diverse acts, and causing many of us to wonder (often aloud) when the group would start to put out some recordings. The line-up has shifted a bit, which may have slowed things down; the group starting as a small guitar/synthesizer project, but seems to have recently solidified with the incorporation of percussion, bass, and slide guitar. And, finally, after being cooped up in their practice space/recording studio for months and leaving many of us curious about what they might be up to, the newly wetted five-piece has released a track online.

"Where'd You Go?" can be downloaded for free from Bandcamp, and those familiar with the group will recognize the sound right away. The stark guitars and an interstitial, tickling synth are introduced amidst an over-reverberated wash, then settle and establish some beautifully desolate scenery. The vocals arrive unrushed a minute or so in, languid and frail, yet persevering. Lines like, "Slow the process, letting go, fire burning cold like snow," are delivered along with lullaby-like glockenspiel, comforting the listener despite the barrenness of the soundscape.

The song is moody and entrancing, and leaves us hoping the band will release more recordings soon. In the meantime, be sure to check them out at The Bidwell Indie 5000 this Sunday.
