Tonight: One World Tribe

Tonight the region's most popular reggae-fusion ensemble, One World Tribe, visits one of its favorite Buffalo venues, Nietzsche's. One World Tribe is the brainchild of founder Kennedy Thompson, who has enlisted quite a number of musicians to create an eclectic, all-inclusive, non-prohibitive reggae infused sound; including, but not limited to, fellow founding members Kenny Hollis (AKA Funky Stroke), Mike Chin (AKA Mr. Chin), Frank Singer (AKA chelaBOP), and Ron Williams (AKA Preach Freedom). The group often tours with a lineup of at least seven, and their current incantation of around twelve contains a slew of different lyricists, both male and female, infinite amounts of percussion, layers of keys, and of course, guitar and bass.

The band has been playing around the Great Lakes region since 1994, and is currently self-releasing their albums on Thompson's Billionaire Records. The band has three albums available on their site for download or purchase, however have incredible amounts of material, and infuses much improvisation into their sets (including freestyle rhyming). A typical OWT show can touch on jazz fusion, calypso, African music, reggae, and hip hop, seamlessly transitioning between them along the way. They have set out to create an all encompassing musical style, rooted in social activism, to unite all people's, and to show all humanity is united as part of the same tribe. One OWT show, and it is easy to see how all people can be united under music. The Nietzsche's show gets started around 10:30 pm, and won't cost more than a few dollars to get in.
