Album of the Week: Aircraft - Sonic Boom

Aircraft quickly established themselves as a band with chops, solid hooks, and a pleasing level of ambition that really made them favorites among the local rock cognoscenti and with the fans of smart but insanely approachable rock. Sonic Boom, their full length debut album, is another kick up the pants of Buffalo rock fans that mixes it up, boldly expanding their sound while retaining the charm and joy of their previous work. Jettisoning the tight, angular and mildly danceable stoner pop of their earlier work, the lads of Aircraft go in a different direction, and the results are damned impressive.

I mean, it's customary for bands, especially local bands to play in the same sandbox for a bit to consolidate a sound, especially a winning sound, before kicking out the walls to mix things up, but Aircraft shows genuine stones by eschewing said methodology for Sonic Boom. From the off, this latest iteration of Aircraft announces that things are different this time around with "Meteorite," a swinging and jaunty number heavy on hand claps and acoustic guitars but light on the crunchy angles that marked their previous work.

This is not to suggest that Aircraft has mellowed out; rather they're deploying their psychedelia more slyly, through soaring choruses and subtle guitar solos they build up to instead of hitting you up front. A little patience on the part of the listener definitely yields rewards, on the slow burner "Through The Storm" and the low roaring anthem "Rising While I Fall."

What's not changed however is Justin John Smith delightfully flexible and evocative voice and the non clichéd Aircraft vocal harmonies that imbues their music with a feeling of communal experience, although here they take on an Arcade Fire vibe, sans pretense. On "Wilt" and "Nano Hurricane," Aircraft wind up to unleash an almost joyful ruckus on the back of James Warren's driving bass and Ian Belknap's rousingly shambolic drums while subtly driving the album forward to a deserved denouement.

That said, I do have to say that the ska horns kind of made me sad on the otherwise exemplary muser "Exist." Still, by the time the album reaches it's climax on the epic "Born A Radio," it's clear that this band put this cycle of songs together with an eye on a cohesive and properly structured album, and Sonic Boom qualifies, a sweet deal for local music fans because these guys are ours.
