Sparklebomb and YesYes Release Single "Our Blood is Made of Eagle$"

Over the weekend, electronic noisemakers (and possible wizards), Sparklebomb and YesYes released a collaborative single to mark YesYes' departure from the city. "Our Blood is Made of Eagle$" is a short burst of amazing ideas, a wonderful cacophony barely contained by a droning beat. Garbled tape samples of vocals (possibly from Sparklebomb's enviable archive of lost phone calls) intersperse, gradually building in intensity until the track ends in a crash while also somehow vaguely reminding me of the disappointment I feel whenever I lose a game of Missle Command. Early 2014 looks to be a busy time for Sparklebomb as she recently announced the completion of her upcoming debut cassette. Funeral Beats. Stay tuned!

Disco Infiltrator: August 16th

This is the first edition of a new weekly feature here at buffaBLOG highlighting the best new tracks from the world of electronic music. As dance music has seen an incredible rise in profile recently, countless innovative producers have started earning recognition for their craft, blowing up seemingly overnight because of an infectious track or sound they've created. This column will take a look at some of the more interesting sounds happening within a genre that's been known to constantly push boundaries by seamlessly blending disparate styles and sounds.

London producer Fort Romeau is known for his atmospheric take on house that uses slow builds and deep grooves to make for a hypnotic sound with an obvious 80's influence. His latest track, "Stay True," is a deep cut with a bassline that evokes the noir disco sound of Chromatics. The gorgeously composed vocal sample provides an added element of depth and keeps things interesting over the seven minute track. The producer's Stay/True EP is out September 16 on Matthew Dear's Ghostly International Label.

Producer Machinedrum released "Eyesdontlie" late last month as the first single on his new label, Ninja Tune. The single's B-side, "Body Touch" features a slower tempo than we're used to hearing from the artist, but doesn't sacrifice any of the infectiously looped vocals and heavy percussion. The track has a dark, grooving atmosphere with an R&B and Trap vibe. Look for the producer's upcoming album Vapor City to be released September 23.

Prolific UK producer George FitzGerald's latest track, "I Can Tell (By The Way You Move)," is an energetic, bright slice of house with a memorable hook, funky synth bass line and a vocal sample placed underneath the hook that helps carry the tracks already driving rhythm. FitzGerald recently signed to Domino records imprint Double Six, and will hopefully be releasing more tunes like this one in the future.

Listener's Digest: Zomby - "Overdose"

London based electronic man of mystery, Zomby, quietly released his latest album, With Love, last week with little hype or fanfare. Yesterday, 4AD released a single off that album, "Overdose." The track will be familiar territory to those who repeatedly listened to Zomby's 2008 masterpiece (i.e. me), Where Were You In '92. A brooding series of synth tones gives way to an anxiety fueling flutteringly fast beat that does not let up until the end of the song. With Love is available now and if the rest of the album is anything like "Overdose" than it is well worth your time.

Local Artist Spotlight: Space Cubs

Space Cubs is the one woman moniker of Suzanne Bonifacio, a rising electronic music artist now based in Buffalo. Bonifacio is formerly a member of Chromakid, a trio who notably opened up for Twin Shadow in 2010, though they have since dismantled, each of the previous members are still actively pursuing musical endeavors.

Bonifacio first began working on the solo content that would become Space Cubs during her early years of college but it was not until her move to Brooklyn that the project would be officially conceived of. During her time there, she worked on the material in a cramped apartment in between running around the city and taking on multiple jobs. The end product of such labor turned out to be  glistening combinations of vocals and synths that draw inspiration from names such as Bjork, Boards of Canada, Junior Boys, and Aphex Twin. And luckily for us, she moved back to Buffalo last April to grace the local music scene with her presence-

Since the wake of her arrival in Buffalo, she has played at a variety of venues including The Bend, The Vault, and Mohawk Place, accompanying locally established electronic acts such as Jeff Repeater, Love Scenes, and Ay Fast. Attending a Space Cubs set proves itself to be quite an all encompassing experience that leans neither towards the kick thumping end of the electronic music spectrum nor the territory of hazy sound-scapes. The aggregate mood of her tracks flutter somewhere right in between, pronouncing itself with distinct vocal melodies that serve as the skeleton of the instrumentals while giving them something like a roof. To understand what I'm talking about, you're going to have to catch her yourself. We'll help you out by keeping you updated on opportunities to see her but in the mean time, check out her facebook page and soundcloud.
