After tonight, Head North is, ironically, going to be heading south on an East Coast tour... (I should probably make a joke that includes the word "West.") But tonight they celebrate with an official tour kickoff featuring the likes of The Traditional, Real People, Figurehead, Lancer, and Maritime Law. Needless to say, this lineup is pretty stacked.
Doors open at 6:00pm tonight. If you can grab them from a band before the show (I know they would appreciate that), they're only $10. At the door, tickets are $13.

It’s always depressing when your favorite local band goes on tour. It’s kind of like being blind sided by a breakup. You are left feeling lost and confused, wandering in the dark, lonely and cold. You begin asking yourself questions like, what did I do? Did I love too much?Did I push too hard? Was I too clingy? Did I smother them? The good news is that your favorite band always come back to town. And when they do come back, they are happy to see you, unlike your ex, who can be found hiding in the frozen food section of the grocery store, until you pass by.
The latest member of this temporary abandonment game is Buffalo’s own pop/ punk outfit Head North. Head North, comprised of Brent Martone (guitar/ vocals), Nick Iacuzzo (guitar) Alex Matos (bass), and Boon Lieber (drums), will be heading out on a 23 date East Coast tour. The tour will be taking the rust belter’s as far south as Orlando, Florida (lucky them). Staying true to it’s DIY ethics, HN's Martone booked the tour himself saying “I'm so stoked man. We're hitting up a bunch of cities we haven't hit since last summer. It's going to be a good time.” The tour is in celebration and support of the band’s second EP release Scrapbook Minds. “The recording process was my favorite we've had,” explains Martone, “Boon, Alex and Nick are such competent players it opened up time to experiment sonically.”
Scrapbook Minds, the debut EP from the current lineup (who have been together since October) of Head North, is chocked full of coming of age tales from the post adolescent heart. Power chords and throaty vocals make this record go ‘round. However not all of the songs are amped up pop/punk anthems.They slow it down with the acoustic, “Brooklyn’s Burning” and “Jake’s Apartment.”
While the EP is technically the second release from Head North, Martone doesn’t see it that way. “Arrows (the first EP), we did it with our old lineup. It doesn't sound anything like the new record. I wrote the words still, but we had a different singer and it was essentially a different band.” Martone explains.
Head North will be kicking off the tour with a show at the Waiting Room this Friday March 7th, along with The Traditional and many more.

Pop-punk is not for everyone. I will concede this. In fact, I will go a step further and say I understand its detractors complaints to some degree. The candy harmonies, nasally vocals, and slick sheen production sometimes feel overblown and histrionic. Sometimes it doesn't feel like "serious music".
Make no mistake though. It is HARD to write a pop-punk song, and while that, in and of itself, is not a reason to necessarily enjoy the music, it is reason to respect it. I, for one, happen to enjoy pop punk and I don't apologize for it. Guilty pleasure? Nope. There are only pleasures in my world.
If you're a fan of pop punk with a little bit of, ahem, late nineties emo (dreaded word), then there is a good chance you've heard of Man Overboard. They write damn catchy songs, and if you grew up loving Saves the Day, the Get Up Kids, or even Simple Plan, you're probably going to like this.
Tonight they play with Real Friends, Young Statues, Head North, and the Daydream Chronicles; some rad bands that occupy a similiar space but have carved out their own unique niche's in the scene. Shows at 6 and $14 is the price so get down to Waiting Room and have a swell time.

Punk is not dead... Well, pop-punk at least. Real Friends' emotive pop-punk assault is coming through tonight, featuring support from Candy Hearts (who just released a QCA session), and Stickup Kid. Rounding out tonight's lineup is local support from Head North and Cedar Kites. I'm pretty sure these dudes are all about eating pizza and singing about their feelings, so if that sounds like something you're into, you know where to be tonight (count me in).
