Tonight: Mohawk Place X-Mas Celebration
Tonight: Merchants & Ronaldraygun
Buffalo's resident grime-rockers the Merchants are playing tonight with Buffalo's resident best-named-band Ronaldraygun! The night is sure to be intensely influenced by the 90's, as all three bands are connoisseurs of spaced-out grunge (or at least fuzzing out every instrument possible) bringing the Smashing Pumpkins or Nirvana to mind. Rounding out the lineup is the equally fuzzy Like a Panther.
The show is at Nietzsche's and it starts at 9. The bands are playing in honor of a man who calls himself "Mista Sparkles," who will be celebrating his 30th birthday. As if that wasn't incentive enough, he'll be donating all proceeds from the show to Hurricane Sandy relief. You're a good man Sparky. We'll see you there.
Tonight: Underground Zombie Invasion
Tonight, Babeville will be holding Underground Zombie
Invasion in the basement of the historic church located at 341 Delaware Avenue.
On the bill are three local bands: The Merchants, Young Suns and The Etchings. Event
promoters, Terror Technologies, will be providing zombie make up for free to all
attendees at this Halloween themed event. Young Suns, who are a recent band
having just started in 2011, play instrumental heavy rock and will be sure to
play an atmospheric set fitting for the show. The Merchants and The Etchings will be playing more traditional rock. Doors open at 7, show starts at 8
and it will cost only 5$ to get in.
Local Artist Spotlight: Young Suns
In their own words, Young Suns are "instrumental, atmospheric, and heavy," and they pretty much hit the nail on the head. The "instrumental" tag draws comparisons to groups like Explosions in the Sky, Russian Circles, or maybe even their Buffalo peers in All of Them Witches. As for being "atmospheric and heavy," the four piece, comprised of guitarists Ryan Higgins and Dan Moscov, bassist Ron Hensberry, and drummer Adam Lilley, craft expansive songs that manage to be equally as beautiful as they are powerful. Young Suns' biggest strength is the ability to pull off that mix without ever overwhelming or boring their listeners - a good example is their song "Whale Fall" (below) where an epic beginning turns into an anxious crescendo. All in all, bands sans vocalists aren't exactly run-of-the-mill, and as for Young Suns, it is interesting to listen to their songs without the distraction of lyrics.
Their next show is this Thursday, October 18, at the Ninth Ward. They make up 1/3 of the entertainment for the "Underground Zombie Invasion" along with The Merchants and The Etchings. The show is $5 - Doors are at 7 and the show starts at 8. Added Bonus: Free zombie makeup for all.
Tonight: The Growlers w/The Merchants
Beach Goth. Another bizarrely-but-accurately named genre (see: chillwave, math rock, crunkcore) to describe the next big thing? It's actually the self-coined term used by The Growlers to describe their signature mix of psychedelia and 60's rock. The band has an original style of recording and performing called "bent sound." This apporach allows The Growlers the opportunity to "bend sound in ways that only drugs can." It could be their use of high-tech recording equipment to record their low-fi groove, or perhaps just their effects-laden, spaced out vocals... but somewhere along the way, The Growlers stumbled upon a signature sound. It's an impossible, but very tangible mix of surf, pop, and even a bit of country. Some would describe The Growlers as "groovy," others might call it... trippy.
Buffalo grime-rockers (another oddly-named, but great genre) The Merchants, featuring buffaBLOG writer Steven Gordon, will also be playing this evening. Denny and the Jets round out tonight's solid lineup - you can catch them at Mohawk Place at 7:00pm, tickets are $12 in advance and $14 at the door.

Buffalo Infringement Festival: Day 8
Hold on to your caps. Day 8 (only 4 more left!) of the Buffalo Infringement Festival might be the best yet with a packed schedule of music, art, theatre, storytelling, and much more. Clips and Blips Film Night
If you’re into short films, Sp@ce 224 will be showing eight of them starting at 7pm and ending at 8:45. A few of the films, including Dreams and Deep In the Woods, are produced by Celestial Lynx Cinema, run by Jordan Bianchi, a talented young director who is currently attending SUNY Oswego for filmmaking. You'll definitely want to peak your head in to catch any one of these films. Many of them are under 10 minutes in length. A list of the films reads below:

Dotsun Moon
Electro-pop quartet Dotsun Moon will be playing the gorgeous Ninth Ward from 9-9:45pm. The group released their debut album, 4 am, last spring and the title pretty much speaks for itself in that it is the perfect set of songs to get you into the nighttime Infringment spirit.
The Merchants
The perfect way for you to top off an awesome day 8 of the festival is with a performance by The Merchants from 11-11:45 at Nietzsche’s in Allentown. The four-piece grunge rockers' performance at DBGB's took the #2 spot on our Infringement list last year, and they've only gotten better since. How do we know this for sure, you ask? Well, because they played our Broadway Market Rooftop Party just last weekend! That's how!
