Tonight (and Tomorrow): Social Distortion

Bands come and go. Some stay with you, other's are a passing phase; a representation of a time in your life perhaps, or maybe just a summer jam you'll never encounter again. The great ones though; they stick. Social Distortion is a band I've loved ever since I was first introduced to punk rock in the mid-nineties. This is a band that has "stuck".

I remember first hearing "Story of My Life" and connecting with it on a few different levels. Their fierce combo of roots rock'n'roll, punk, and country was just what I was looking for at that time in my life; teenage rebellion in bored suburbia. They had the look, the vibe and the sound. Gritty, yet melodic. Unrefined, yet undeniably pop in their hooks and choruses. You could say it was love at first listen. Some years later, I still follow Social Distortion and catch them every chance I get. Their last release didn't exactly blow me away but they still kill it live and Mike Ness is still one of the most compelling frontmen in this day and age.

Tonight the band is playing Town Ballroom. Unfortunately, the show is sold out. Fortunately, they are playing again tomorrow night too. If you've never seen Social D, it is with great enthusiasm that I stress you do. They can still churn a pit, or if your thing is sitting back with a beer and laughing at Mike's stories, well there's that too. Either way, you'll find yourself walking away glad you chalked up the money. Doors are at 7pm. Tickets for Wednesday's show are $38. Chuck Ragan and Suedehead open both nights.
