Earlier this year, indie rock trio the Antlers followed up the epic grandeur of their emotionally wrenching, 2009 release Hospice, with the atmospheric and ethereal, although no less of a gut punch, Burst Apart, which, until Bon Iver decided to release a new record not long after, was my leading candidate for album of the year. Later this month on November 22nd, the Antlers will release (together), an EP featuring alternate takes of Burst Apart tracks, an incredible collaboration with Neon Indian, and a cover of The xx's "VCR". The original, a simple, xylophone led melody fronted by the guy/girl vocals of xx singers Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim, and the new take both have a degree of innocence to them. For their rather stripped down version, the Antlers added shimmering keys and a simple drum beat to turn the song into that perfect tune for a late night drive home. Enjoy.
