Tonight at Soundlab, MNM Presents The Hood Slung Tour: Star Slinger, The Hood Internet and Chrissy Murderbot.
Star Slinger, at only 24 years old, has quickly gained worldwide recognition. His remixes are recognized by artists such as Diplo, Jamie XX, and Benji B. His signature style of chopped beats, pitch adjustments and his own drum pattern additions while still incorporating elements from a track makes it entirely his own. His refix of Rihanna's "We Found Love" had me hooked and his remix of "Peso" by A$AP Rocky is speedy and hard-hitting. Don't think that his only skill is remixing; he has an undeniable talent with his original productions. There's a certain beauty that emits through his music. He "combines the hyper soul sampling of Kanye West or Dipset producers Heatmakerz with a bubbling psychedelia reminiscent of J Dilla's spacier moments" according to Pitchfork.
Also performing tonight is The Hood Internet. Chicago based ABX and STV SLV comprise the duo group. In addition to putting out almost 500 mixes and free downloads, they've gained nationwide recognition performing at events such as SXSW, Bonnaroo, Camp Bisco and the Mad Decent Block Party. They have also worked alongside with NYC clothing label Mishka. Their tune "Rude Baptism" shows that they can master mashing the hip-hop vibe from Rihanna's "Rude Boy" and indie samples from Crystal Castle's "Baptism" into one sexy track.
Chris Shively, known by his DJ moniker, Chrissy Murderbot is also a Chicago based DJ and producer. He's "in love with juke-rave-jungle-disco-dubstep-hi-NRG-gangsta-dancehall-ghetto-garage-core" according to last.fm. He's also head honcho for Sleazetone Records, a Chicago-based record label focused on genres such as rave revival, juke, bassline, neo-disco and ghetto house.
