Ay Fast Joins ZVK In Cassette Release

Experimental Buffalo producer Ay Fast has teamed up with ZKW to release a duel-sided cassette via Cleveland based label, A Soundesign Recording. The first side, Dire Docks, listens like an exquisitely rendered collection of sonic montages. Generously packed are glitchy static screams, warped samples, distorted percussion and warbling filter manipulations. Melodic motifs appear, disappear, and re-emerge throughout the dissonant composition which, according to Adrian Bertolone (Ay Fast), is part homage to living in Buffalo.

ZVK's end, Summa Cum Laude, starts off with a rumbling, almost ceremonial-like introduction. It continues onto various stages of transgression and release, symphonic melodies are juxtaposed with exotic audio clips, sonic rings are arranged with the type of ghostly resonance radiators emit. I'm tempted to call it a carnival of sardonic sound production.

Tonight: Melt-Banana w/ Lesionread, Ay Fast

Japan, it would appear, went off the deep end into wackiness sometime in the 80s; since the 90s, its capitalism-meets-schizophrenia, rampant-consumerist culture has had a disaffected release in Melt-Banana. The Tokyo-based four-piece mixes punk and pop and noise into an wall of WTF cerebral madness, both chaotic and precise, with energetic, melodically barked vocals that sounds like the soundtrack to an epilepsy inducing Japanese commercial for fish lightbulbs or something. Backed by a prominent, grindcore-leaning rhythm section, and guitar that often slips into circuit-bent, sound-effect territory, Yasuko Onuki's lyrics are a hyperactive word salad, delivered with undeniable fervor. I was a fan for years before I even realized they were in English; even though it was catchy enough to sing along with, I'd just be shouting stuff like “punch kick punch!” like I had too much candy while playing Street Fighter Turbo at the neon game works. The band is crazy live, and have to be seen to be believed, if even then. Check them out at The Tralf tonight (622 Main St., 8PM, $15?), with the almost-equally puzzling Buffalo weirdo art acts, Lesionread and Ay Fast. Tonight: Fire Death and Ilza

And just in case Limp Bizkit isn't on your agenda for tonight, this evening the Vault will host an lineup of experimental music acts put together by Foundry, an up and coming production company based in Buffalo. The event will feature Cleveland based Fire Death (in the territory of free jazz coupled with heavy electronics) and Ilza (minimalist / atmospheric). They'll be accompanied by local sound troubadours VWLS, Ay Fast, and Kevin Cain. Doors open at 8PM and $5 will let you through. See you there.

Tonight: Jamaican Queens

"Trap-pop" is not a phrase you'd think would warrant a lot of fanfare, but Detroit based Jamaican Queens make it seem like a revelation on their latest album, Wormfood. Deep, dusty beats accompanied by folksy songwriting which, on tracks like "Wellfleet Outro," manage to straddle a line between melancholy and irreverent. Songs get yanked in every direction by acoustic guitars, boy-girl harmonies and kinetic instrumentals, yet nothing ever feels out of place. This level of unpredictably is often attempted but rarely pulled off as successfully as it is here, even pulling off an unexpected grand crescendo on ballad, "Sharkteeth." They'll be stopping by The Vault tonight with local support from Lesionread and Ay Fast. Doors are at 8pm.

Tonight: FOUNDRY Launch Party - Night 2

Tonight marks the second evening of Foundry's two night launching event at Soundlab, and in case you weren't aware, Foundry is the new production company based in Buffalo focusing on bringing performances and installations that are a product of both "inspired artistry and unconventional aesthetics." As their mission statement might suggest, it'll be a night of exciting, experimental electronic music, driven by beats and reverberations that will steer your head space into hazy, foreign territory. On the lineup is Container, the one man techno connoisseur who will throw everything-you-thought-you-knew-about-techno somewhere out of sight. As the event-page describes, Container proves that "techno can be sloppy, unordered, punk, and, above all, casual. It's lopsided, asymmetrical and unevenly weighted." Unicorn Hardon, Timeghost, and local favorites UVB-76, and Ay Fast will be gracing the stage as well with equally distinct beats for your aural enjoyment. Tickets are $8, and doors open at 8PM.
