Tonight: The Misfits


It's one of the most iconic logo's in rock'n'roll. The Misfits' skull can be spotted miles away; often greeted with enthusiastic shouts and howls. Whether a punk rocker or casual music fan, everyone recognizes it, even if they aren't exactly sure what it refers to. Much like KISS, albeit, a darker, faster and more menacing version, The Misfits have turned that logo and their brand into a brand-name. They are now known, because of it, which is strange because I remember them as the underground punk band that all my friends worshipped. This popularity has won them some fans and lost them some fans. One thing is undeniably true about our ghoulish friends.

 The Misfits are one of the most iconic punk rock groups of all-time and arguably one of the biggest cult bands (i.e. never saw any mainstream success) that has ever walked this planet. And "Astro Zombies" is one of my favorite songs, by any band, ever. So yea....

 Tonight, the most recent incarnation of the band (Jerry Only singing) will be putting on the makeup for a show at Buffalo Iron Works (8pm, $30) along with locals, Flood Drinker and Low Road Revival. For fans of skulls, demons, bad language, sick pits, and all the other stuff your parents warned you about.

Tonight: Mayday Tour Kick-Off


This hellish winter has put a spell on all of us, leaving Western NYers drained, stale and, for lack of better words, "over it". So it makes perfect sense that Buffalo surf-punks, Mayday, would name their upcoming tour the "Life's a Beach" tour (It's also an utterly fantastic Kurt Vile jam); a tribute to all things warm, beachy, and awesome. My minds already on to warmer pastures.

 Tour kicks off tonight at the Northrup House (ask a punk, 7pm, $6) with a heavyweight bill of locals including Flood Drinker, known for drinking floods, stoner rock outcasts, Malarchuk, Grain Assault (who I assume assaults grain in their spare time?), and Sexist. A cool show to support a cool local band as they go on a cool tour and, hopefully, have some cool times. And while you're at it, buy Mayday's new EP. I hear it rips.

Tonight: Agatha


If your Wednesday evening forecast is trying to get heavy, then may we recommend heading to the PolishLibrary? Seattle's Agatha are heavy and fast, like the mean between Young Widows' guttural crunch and the hell bent death trip urgency of XBXRX, with maybe a dash of Arab On Radar's perverse irreverence. The bill gets rounded out with local punk/hc from Human Touch and Flood Drinker, as well as “Buffalo blasting drug cannon” Sonorous Gale. It's at Seven and costs Five Dollars and the address is Six Hundred Twelve Fillmore!

Tonight: MAYDAY!


The female-fronted anarcho-surf punks in MAYDAY! are making their triumphant return to the Buffalo scene this evening.  They are joined by a number of other bizarrely genre'd bands including The Narcs ("Rochester's urban concern"), the "Clevo punk punks" in Smooth Brain, and the dope proto-metalheads in Flood Drinker.  

 The show starts at 8:00pm with a $6 door.  It's at the Jungle Gym - 357 Breckenridge - although Facebook says this event is located in Buffalo, Outer Space.  You might want to leave a bit early then.

Tonight: Icon Gallery & Resist Control


The Polish Library, easily one of the coolest venues in Buffalo, is going to be pulsing with energy tonight when Icon Gallery and Resist Control plug their amps in and, undoubtedly, turn the volume up to "punk mayhem" levels.

Icon Gallery hails from Pittsburgh and plays a brooding-and-melodic-while-still-energetic brand of punk that features catchy vibrato-laden riffs and vocals from Chani Ferens that would make Bruce Dickinson proud.  A sidenote of personal interest to me, they list both Prince and Heart as influences... that is a pretty awesome combo if you ask me.

Resist Control will be releasing their Dissipation EP on special edition cassette at tonight's performance (complete with unreleased tracks, silk screen packaging annnnnnnd the all-important digital download code).  Described as "powerful, interesting hardcore with intelligent lyrics", Resist Control promises high energy without the morose, self-loathing style present in much of the hardcore scene.

Playing in support tonight are Pregnancy Scare, Backbiter, and Flood Drinker.  All bands come from the Queen City and will keep you moving with their various markers on the road map of punk rock.

Doors are at 7:30 with an 8:00 start time... (8:00 sharp, not punk time).
