Look at it outside. Winter is back and so begins our long, brutal Buffalo existence for the next few months. On the brighter side, Buffalo's On Beta, the three piece piano driven rock act, has just released a pretty sharp new website (you may visit the site here), and along with that, a free new song, titled "Anything at All." In fact, the Harvest Sum trio will be releasing a new, free track every two weeks on the site, and old tracks can be purchased for only $.80. Not a bad deal at all.

Nietzche's hosts a packed local bill tonight. Lazlo Hollyfeld has been playing out pretty intermittently these past few years, but are now back with a vengeance. Their set at the Botanical Gardens Night Lights event was a musical and visual match made in heaven. Tonight, per their event page, they promise to dust off some old material that hasn't been played in a while. BuffaBLOG Birthday Party veterans On Beta will be joining them, along with another blog favorite, Applennium. I'm excited to see Applennium return to the stage, as the singles they've been releasing over the past year hint at a promising upcoming release (I hope?). Doors are at 9, and for a paltry $5, you can't afford not to go.

So Mohawk Place dies tonight, as we all know by now. There's been a profusion of obituaries in the local press (including this little blog) over the last few weeks. And everyone is getting sentimental, even Spicoli went a few paragraphs without being mean and sardonic. You'd think a fucking dog died or something.

Anyway, there's not really much I can say that hasn't already been said, so I'll keep this brief. The bands that are playing are some of the finest to have ever hit the notorious Mohawk stage over the years: Thermidors, Failures Union, On Beta, Semi-Tough, Roger Bryan and the Orphans, The Old Sweethearts, Johnny Nobody, Handsome Jack, Two Cow Garage, Chylde, and Girlpope. And it's been sold out for a while. I have to lock up to go get drunk at my favorite bar for the last time tonight, fellas. Let's tie ourselves to the mast and set this ship on fire.

(But don't actually, maybe!)

Tonight Mohawk Place will put on one final Christmas bash before it closes its doors for good in a few weeks. Its a sad reality, but there’s no better way to celebrate the holidays by going out with friends, supporting talented local bands, while also honoring what will go down as one of Buffalo’s greatest venues. The Mordaunt Sisters, On Beta, and The Merchants are all on the bill, including an acoustic set from Bill Nehill. This is sure to be a great local indie-rock showcase, complete with drink specials, Christmas cookies, and free admission too! Doors are at 7. Come celebrate Christmas with your friends at Mohawk.

Unless you've already plunged into your Thanksgiving leftovers, 24 hours should give us all plenty of time to break out of that Tryptophan-induced turkey coma. If you're still having trouble, a wonderful Buffalo showcase is taking place tonight, featuring three excellent bands - the Pavement-esque Bearhunter, On Beta, and Fairweathers.  

Some loud music could do us all some good. This is, of course, assuming you've survived Black Friday. For the brave souls who managed to make it through the workday, or even the savvy shoppers who sold their souls for some good deals, if you need to blow off some steam, the show starts at 9:00PM at Mohawk Place.

After a busy spring, releasing their debut album and playing a marathon of shows in the Buffalo area, Canary Girls took the summer off. Vacation is over, however, and tonight marks their return to the stage at Duke's, supposedly armed with new material. Sharing the bill will be On Beta, another Buffalo act that released one of the better albums of this past year. They will be joined by Great Deceivers, a band making their stop in Buffalo all they way from Orlando, Florida.  This is one of the more solid bills Duke's has put together for their ongoing Vertigo Night series, and should serve as good counter programming to the mashup shenanigans happening across town. Doors are at 10, and as always, Dante Valour will be spinning your favorites all night. If you get lucky maybe he'll let you touch his sideburns.

Attention Buffalo: There's a new game in town. A few days ago the Quiet Country Audio site went live with a bang. QCA is a studio out in Alden run by Paul Besch, which hosts live video sessions (similiar to Daytrotter and From the Basement). Thus far, some real legit bands have been featured in this series including Two Cow Garage, Sleepy Hahas, Pentimento, On Beta and Roger Bryan. If you're a fan of any of these bands, and you should be, check out the new site and watch some of the vidz or hear the sessions at QCA's bandcamp page. I have a feeling we're going to be hearing quite a bit from QCA in the future.

When I heard that On Beta was holding a CD release party for their album, There's Blood In Your Heart, my first reaction was "It's about time!" We reviewed the record back in March, and as it turned out, we just had THE SCOOP, but now YOU CAN TOO. Head to Mohawk Place (47 E. Mohawk St, 9PM) to hear the trio pound out their uber-infectious piano-centric pop, and you'll also be treated to a solo set by Two Cow Garage's Micah Schnabel, and be able to pick up a copy of the frustratingly delayed CD for super cheap - a good life decision, as the National-meets-Keane-with-a-dose-of-Chicago's-"Saturday"-(greatest song ever?) foray is, like I say, "uber-infectious."

The first buffaBLOG post was on March 28th of 2010 (and what a post it was).  Since then, we have written over 2200 posts,  recorded dozens of podcasts, and attended hundreds of concerts, which leads us up to today, as our little blog has turned two years old.  Tonight, we are throwing ourselves a birthday party and what better way to celebrate than with a handful of our favorite Buffalo musicians.  All week long, we have been previewing our stellar lineup of acts, which constists of Andrew J. Reimers' Country Punk Extravanganza, Early Attic, On Beta, Ramforinkus, and Voodoo Friends, but as for tonight, make sure to get to Nietzsche's for the real thing.  Music begins at 10:00pm sharp, with a cover of only $5, and goes all night long.  Be there to celebrate this great night with us.  I can only hope our birthday is as glorious as Don's was.
