Concert Review: Dopapod

After waiting to see Dopapod for over a year, I was beyond jazzed to check out their set at The Waiting Room last night. This venue was an ideal spot for the show. The low ceilings created an illusion of a cavern with studio lighting, providing an intimate setting and sonic enclosure. The energy of the small crowd (around 200 or so) was on high. We were all stoked for the show to begin, and a phrase I kept hearing was, "we're at Dopapod right now!" I couldn't help but grin.

Buffalo-based jam band Space Junk kicked off the evening with upbeat dance tunes, an appropriate choice to contrast the (occasionally) heavier sound of Dopapod. They played two extended songs that blended into each other, beginning with "Snowblinds," moving into "Birds of Prey," channeling elements of electronic and funk that set a positive and peaceful tone to the evening.

Around 10:30 Dopapod opened with "Bubble Brain" off their latest album Redivider. Maneuvering through an opening that sounded like we were entering on an interstellar voyage, to a sudden break into a metallic drop, this was a strong choice. I was consistently impressed how well their sound shifted in dynamics, like a quiet, ethereal organ solo by Eli to sudden thud in pressure created by bassist Chuck, notably on "Onionhead" and "French Bowling." Unfortunately their current drummer Fro wasn't able to attend, and they had Scott Zwang hold down the fort. His performance was sharp and on point, especially with having a short window to learn most of their material.

"Trapper Keeper" was one of the highlights, a sizzling opening with lyrics lamenting the magnetic and forceful power of technology. "Can we play a new game/ look inside my trapper keeper" echoes the addictive and click-happy generation, always seeking something higher, newer, instead of taking a kick down the block and feeling the grass with our fingertips. "Trapper keeper" has to be one of the best expressions for a computer-ized object I've heard to date. For the finale they closed with "Vol. 3 #86" that featured more drawn out phrases from each member of the band.

We had the pleasure of singing Rob a happy birthday, and in return he serenaded us with a slick, jazzy tune, featuring his unique voice and wide-range of melody. A truly fantastic way to end the evening! Thank you Rob for letting me snag the setlist:

Tonight: Dopapod

When I listen to Dopapod, my heart shivers a beat and tugs on my brain chords--what is this ridiculous and mesmerizing combination of sounds? The four-piece ensemble shatters genre lines, and while they may be classified as a "jam" band, their sound easily defies the label, coming closer to jazz-styled improvisations and well-rehearsed composition. This evening Dopapod will be playing at The Waiting Room, a perfectly intimate venue for this kind of dig. Interstellar funkadelics Space Junk will be kicking things off around 8 p.m., so be there on time with a peaceful groove in your step. $15 should do the trick!

Tonight: DrFameus

Disco Biscuits fans have been left somewhat wanting as of late, with only the occasional festival set here and there and it's members bouncing around the country in various side projects. If there is one side project worth catching, it is the alter ego of their virtuoso drummer Allen Aucoin, aka DrFameus. Allen took over the the rhythm section for the then floundering band when kick drum murderer Sam Altman departed in 2005.  Since then, he has emerged as the band's most consistent member, blurring the boundaries of electronic music genres with all the intensity of the malfunctioning cyborg from Robocop. No stranger to the Buffalo music scene, DrFameus has been a mainstay at Duke's the past few years, although tonight finds him across the street at the endless wooden corridor of dreams known as Nietzsche's. He'll be joined by fellow electronic rockers Dopapod, also no strangers to Buffalo, rounding out a solid bill in Allentown (pun intended). Doors are at 9pm.  Tickets are $12 advance. Come see DrFameus prove that he needs no band to melt your face, you have 20 seconds to comply.

Tonight: Dopapod

There's a special treat for the electro/jam/psychadelia crowd tonight at Soundlab - Boston's Dopapod. How am I going to describe their sound? Just take a look at their "Artists We Also Like" on Facebook - "Primus, MMW, Tool, Phish, Lettuce, Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine, Nirvana, Led Zeppelin, Rubblebucket, Bassnectar, Gwar." So it sounds like that, only if you added a layer of synth-keyb grooviness. I'm currently vibing out to the load of free live music you can listen to of theirs here - they just segued into an instrumental dance version of Nirvana's "All Apologies." Just go. Plus, Aqueous, everyone's favorite local jam band, is opening. Doors open at 9 p.m., and admission is $12.
