Tonight: The Fresh & Onlys w/Quilt and The Word Girls UK

There have been so many good shows this fall that I am running out of time for the other parts of my life. Not that I am complaining, it has just become a time management issue. Overall, this is an awesome development. The last week alone has been packed and the schedule is not looking to let up anytime soon. Tonight, clear your calendar and head down to Soundlab for an excellent line up of California based garage and psych rock.

2012 has been a great one for fans of new garage rock with excellent new releases from Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees, and the The Fresh & Onlys, who will be playing Soundlab tonight. Formed in 2008, the San Francisco group has released a string of EPs and full lengths at a rate of 1-2  per year with their latest album, Long Slow Dance, being their strongest to date.Touring in support of this LP, tonight is an opportunity to catch a group hitting their stride.

Equally exciting, psych rockers, Quilt, are also on this show. Quilt released their first album, a collection of hazy spaced out songs, on Mexican Summer last year. The debut can also be streamed, in its entirety, from the group's Bandcamp page.

The Word Girls UK will be opening for both bands.

Tonight: Fiona Apple

“Be kind to me, or treat me mean,
I’ll make the most of it
I’m an extraordinary machine.”

Fiona Apple will be taking the Kleinhan’s stage tonight. The bells and xylophone sounds, her sultry vocals of heartbreak and self-improvement that comprise her 2005 Extraordinary Machine is what has made this particular album frequently listened to in my collection. Her 1996 album Tidal is chock full of classics including the quick poetry of “Sleep to Dream” and the swooning vocals and imagery of “Shadowboxer.” She can often be prejudged and placed into “that girl” group of musicians; although not, Apple could have easily been one of the female musicians mentioned in this Aimee Mann skit on IFC’s hipster-hilarious show Portlandia. Don’t judge her on artists she’s similar to, Fiona Apple has a sound of her own and will most definitely put on an amazing show.

Concert Review: MONO

If the famed Italian composer Ennio Morricone is synonymous with the music of "Spaghetti Western" movies than the best way I can describe the music of MONO (their live performances anyway) is like a "Sushi Western"...

...that, or sex music for drug people.

There is an air of mystery to them, for sure.  They take the stage with nary a word to anyone and launch into light and fanciful guitar work that cascades into a vast, roaring sea of noise.  Dialed in, calculated noise.  Nothing that happens on the stage happens without MONO intending for it to.  Ten years of perfecting their sound has led to a band so disciplined that, at some points during the show, it almost seems as if the music is making itself... it's that organic.

MONO's current tour is in support of their latest album, For My Parents.  Their newest material comprised the bulk of the setlist as their latest effort was just released on September 4th.

The choice of songs performed at the show was the one minor drawback for me.  Everything was performed impeccably but songs tended to become indiscernible from one another at times due to the overarching theme of For My Parents.  It would have been nice to hear some more material from their back catalog (which, I know, is often a complaint of fans... I also go back to one of the greatest statements I've ever heard a musician make from stage when Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth said something along the lines of "You may not like some of the music we are about to play but as musicians we feel that it is important to like the music you make.  If you're going to release new music then you need to stand behind it... and we like our music.  We're not going to go on tour and play the same tired songs every tour like some other bands do, no, we are always moving forward".  That has stuck with me and I will always respect an artists' motivation to share their newest music with their audience).  I also realize that MONO's songs are almost all over ten minutes long and there are only so many songs they can play in a given night.

The energy certainly made up for any similarities between songs, however.  One doesn't often associate "high energy" with a band that features both guitarists sitting on stools for the major duration of a show... MONO proves that theory to be incorrect. Guitarists Takaakira Goto and Hideki Suematsu emitted focused energy whether they were fingerpicking light chord shapes or thrashing away at their guitars with tremolo picking insanity.  All while Tamaki Kunishi kept the driving rhythm going via bass or piano as she swayed back and forth to the force of the song.  This was all brought together by the thunderous drumming of Yasunori Takada who made judicious use of both a timpani and gong in addition to his standard drum kit... the gong was awesome and, for once, fully utilized rather than serving as a showpiece for an egomaniacal rock drummer who only uses it to finish a drum solo.

No vocals.  No crowd banter.  No egos.  Pure instrumental symphonic music.

After attending the show, I am certainly looking forward to checking out more of their back catalog to see what their other material sounds like.

Tonight: Girl Talk

Ever find yourself listening to "The Weight" by The Band when subliminally in the back of your mind you hear the familiar shouts of Young Joc saying "anywhere ya meet me, guaranteed it's goin' down."  Girl Talk tends to have that effect.

Under Illegal Art Record label, mash-up artist Greg Gills, better known by his moniker Girl Talk, will be taking the stage tonight at the Buffalo Outer Harbor.  If you have no knowledge of his work and can't quite grasp the immensity of his jam-packed sampled catalog, his newest album All Day has 372 samples in a matter of 71 minutes.  Yeah, 372 song samples in nearly an hour.  Multi-genre and impeccably cut and blended, his tracks have a way of satisfying everyone's taste buds all the while keeping you bumpin' and grinding.

"Livetronica dubcore" will be heard from Rochester group RootsCollider and Buffalo electronic duo Love Scenes will be opening as well.

Just Announced: The Men

In November, The Men will be adding to what is already a packed season for live music. Currently touring in support of this year’s excellent Open Your Heart, the group will be playing at Mohawk Place on November 8. Unrelenting and visceral, The Men have been consistently putting out great music for a few years.  Open Your Heart was one of the strongest releases this year and their preceding album, Leave Home, was a highlight of 2011. This is a great opportunity to see the band in a smaller venue. Tickets are available now, for the incredibly low price of $10, here.

Tonight: The Black Angels

This frankly astounding year of live music in Buffalo continues tonight at the Town Ballroom when The Black Angels return to Buffalo, with Night Beats in support. Austin's Black Angels made a hell of an impression when they played the Tralf a few years ago on the Dropout Boogie Tour with Black Mountain thanks to their mesmerizing sound, excellent 60's American psychedelia (think The Doors, Velvets, The Zombies, and Jefferson Airplane... all at once), and seriously fantastic light show. Night Beats, from Seattle will be opening the show with their intriguing psychedelic r&b influenced rock. Doors open at 7 PM, tickets are $22, and yes they are still available.

Yeah Buffalo, can we not have a repeat of Yeasayer? How could that happen for Yeasayer? And you were doing so good up to this point. Anyways, city of mine, here's your chance to redeem yourself. Hipster doofuses of Elmwood in particular... here's your chance to really redeem yourselves, and to not just pose but to actually make yourselves useful.

OK, I'm done. Black Angels. Killer show. Be there.

Tonight: Yeasayer

I feel like I've said the words "Town Ballroom has been kicking ass" a little too much lately. A lot of great bands have come through the past few months, but they're about to get a run for their money. Through two full length albums (and hints of their third), Yeasayer have remained delightfully unclassifiable, making it a pain in the ass for someone like me to sum up their music in a short paragraph. The tighter, poppier approach of Odd Blood seems to have given way to a more droning, electronic sound on new singles "Henrietta" and "Longevity", taken from their upcoming album Fragrant World. The former taking the A and B approach, switching gears halfway through from dub basslines to a wall of layered ambience, the latter maintaining that vibe throughout, albeit a bit more sparce. The variety makes for a dynamic live show, high on energy but never letting a particular rhythm get stale.

A midweek bill with Yeasayer should be enough to get you out of the house, but electronic producer and sideburns aficionado Daedelus will be opening the show, making this in the running for show of the year. Slide those dancing socks into your sandals and get there early.  Doors are at 7 and this is an all ages show, so beware the little buggers with blown minds.

Just Announced: Odd Future

GOLF WANG. FLOG GNAW. ODD FUTURE. WOLF GANG. KILL THEM ALL.

On Sunday September 9, 2012 the Odd Future crew is bringing the Camp Flog Gnaw tour through Buffalo.  Since their very minimal beginning in 2007, OF has blown up in most recent years.  Even after crew member Tyler, The Creator's video release for "Yonkers," it still took some time for OFWGKTA to be a familiar name in the minds of the masses.  With a #1 ranking on the 2011 Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Album list show and now a show on Comedy Central, technicolor kittens and screwed demon-like vocals are just two small stamps of their existence.

Tonight: Big Freedia

"Big Freedia, The Dick Eater, The Late Night Creeper, Stalkin Yo' Man, You Betta Believe." Big Freedia will be performing at Soundlab tonight with special local guests Jack Topht and DJ Mario Bee.  Otherwise known as Freddie Ross, she is an American eficiando of Bounce music.  This genre of music is hip-hop derived from New Orleans and can be described as booty bouncing and twerk worthy.  The "Queen Diva" has performed worldwide and has shared the stage with artists such as Spank Rock, Ninjasonik, and Snoop Dogg.

Since it is Bounce music, dancing is highly emphasized.  On Big Freedia's website, there is a section offering lessons on how to move.  "The 'pussy' is the focus of the 'girl' dance motions, though those without a physical one will be put in touch with their own etheric 'pussy'. The class will also learn different exercises to promote fluidity in the pelvic area, even for those with limited mobility. And it's a lot of FUN!"

A quote from his Facebook description, local hip-hop/grime/punk rapper "Jack Topht would like to entertain and dazzle you with his wit and juxtapositioning of pithy, connotation drenched, signifiers building to a crescendo of zeitgeist defining perfect wisdom forever. also probably some sex jokes."

The very talented DJ Mario Bee will also be opening.  From the local Toats Orig collective, Mario Bee loves his crowd and knows how to make them wile out.

The Drum Machine Report

You only live once. So they say on Twitter, the Page 6 news of the world. That's not true, I'm coming back as big fat cat after I die. Then it will be accepted practice to continually complain about "genre nomenclature" and "copycat artists." When will it be enough? People need to shut up and enjoy their own tastes in music. Whining and bickering about music is topically in vain. Art is subjective.

Rolling Stone launches another javelin into my brain with this most recent issue's cover featuring Deadmau5 and the headline: "The Clubs! The Festivals! The Drugs! And the DJs who Rule the World!" referring to Deadmau5, Skrillex, and Swedish House Mafia. Now despite the issues you and I may have with that titling, it's kinda crazy to see on the cover of RS. I jokingly said to Mario Bee "They're ruining all of our (secret) fun." to which he laughingly concurred. But I was later reminded by someone else, that Electronic and Dance music has continuously come in and out of the fringe of popularity. That is true; however, it is becoming a scintillating topic being volleyed between the critics, fans, and artists. My opinion is that it's all a product of the Music and Entertainment business. What's popular right now, is what's making money right now. Simple business. Becoming fresh with what's or remaining alluringly illusive is entirely up to you. Tastes are personal.

Party lovers rejoiced with the announcement of the Bass Mountain Music Festival featuring DIESELBOY at the Cloud 9 campground in West Valley, NY. The two day festival will run August 3-5 and is another addition to the already fun Summer here in WNY. This weekend is a little light as far as events go but here's whats worth checking out:

Ass-clappin gonna happen. Also on the bill are Buffalo kooky rapper JACK TOFT and DJ MARIO BEE.

And with DJs BEARSKIN RUG,  THE OWSKI,  RY DIGGS, and RUFUS GIBSON playing to your fancy. I've been crushing over Ry Diggs' sets lately and Rufus Gibson has really been bringing the   Funk back into the house. You won't want to miss out on this party.

Be easy Buffalo. You can be mad, just don't stay mad. Much love.

LCD Soundsystem Documentary to screen at Market Arcade in July

On Wednesday, July 18th, the Market Arcade Theatre(639 Main Street) will be offering a one night only screening of the LCD Soundsystem documentary titled Shut Up & Play the Hits.  The film follows LCD front man James Murphy as he leads up to the indie dance act's final show, April 2nd 2011 at Madison Square Garden, as well as footage from the concert and the immediate aftermath.  The band should be a model for others on how to end on a high note.  LCD released their best album, at least in my opinion, in 2010's This is Happening, and rather than drag the band to a tiresome end, Murphy went out on top with a 4 hour show for the ages at the Garden.  Tickets for the screening go on sale this Wednesday, June 27th, for a flat price of $10, and can be purchase at Supernaut Productions website.  The film starts at 8:00pm.
