Set to be released on Dadstache Records (Skirts [formerly Meanagers], Routine Involvements, and bc likes you!), Rochester based outfit, Fat Africa, released their teaser single for their upcoming album. "Futility, or..." is a crawling minimalist track which can be be described as Modest Mouse's "Dramamine" covered by the xx. Check it out below.

Soul Butchers have recently made a blip on our radar with their debut 7 deep EP/short album 18 Wheeler (produced by Mr. Skimask). The album starts off with a retro-punk flavor similar to that of locals Irving Klaws or Wolf Tickets, but the real magic creeps out on the third track, titled "See Me Again," where the band distances itself from the rowdy Stooges-like intensity. "See Me Again" sounds like a mix between a lighter Les Savy Fav meshed with more cathartic Dismemberment Plan. Comprised of past members of 90's hardcore/punk band, Black Tar, and more recently The Afterbirth Tycoon and Trailerpark Tornados, Soul Butchers' next show will be at Spiral Scratch's Record Store Day showcase on 4/19. Request "See Me Again."

This week we have been previewing the five great acts we have in store for our fourth birthday bash this Saturday at DBGB’s. Third on the lineup is Alex Berkley & the Atlanta Falcons. You may have seen Berkley’s solo workings before, singing songs about Dawson’s Creek or Star Trek on an acoustic guitar any given Monday night in the heart of Allen, but this Saturday’s performance will be different. Berkley is set to be backed by his newly reformed backing band, the Atlanta Falcons, consisting of Sonny Baker (Lazlo Hollyfeld, Wooden Waves, A Hotel Nourishing), Billy Fulton (Wooden Waves, Ay Karou) and Colin Griffin (Bear Exchange).
Berkley’s songwriting style is quirky yet sincere, comparable to Jeff Mangum/Neutral Milk Hotel or the Mountains Goats. The band is set to perform numerous blasts from the past, including songs off Lists and Listlessness, Berkley’s 2008 debut full-length that was retroactively declared buffaBLOG’s top local album of 2008.
Music kicks off at 10pm sharp with a cover of $5.

Tonight: Difficult Night/Damian Release Show
Tonight, The Big Herk is set to host a double album release party for both Damian and Difficult Night. Damian has been quiet for close to two years, locked away working on the follow-up to the highly impressive debut album, Soul Night, with Steak and Cake mastermind, Brandon Schlia. All while doing this, Damian contributed to the toned down slacker Americana fourtet, Difficult Night, who debuted released their Difficult Nights EP last week. The new twelve song Damian album, titled You Don’t Need It, can be streamed here. And trust me, if you want to know all the words tonight, you will need it. Music kicks off tonight at 8:30.

Last night Buffalo's best math-rock duo, All of Them Witches, released a new EP on bandcamp titled Future Notes. The three-song tease summarizes AOTW in a nutshell: proggy, complicated, unpredictable rhythms and measures that bring the listener on a roller coaster of tension, abrupt stops, and release. Check out "Darker Matter" below.

After a morning of heavy-hitting investigative journalism that I haven't delved into since my 2005 riveting article on the absence of chicken patties in the Hickey Dining Hall, I finally got the details straight for tonight's show featuring Canada's YouYourself&i at Ashker's. Yes, there is a Sugar City event happening featuring numerous Fun-a-Day projects ranging from arts and crafts to full-out album(s?), but on the other side, an international touring sensation performing under the moniker YouYourself&i. The project is headed by Montreal's Daniel Gélinas, a multi-instrumentalists with a knack for melodies complete with raspy, just-getting-over-a-cold singing voice (in a good way). If you are a fan of early Jose Gonzalez meets an exhausted Andrew Bird, then head on over to Ashker's. YouYourself&i should be going on around 9pm, but get there earlier to see the Fun-a-Day exhibit!

Tonight the Jungle Gym will play host to a night of firsts, the first show from a collective Buffalo regulars, Alpha Hopper, as well as an introduction to Facility Men. Alpha Hopper is a female-fronted driving punk project complete with shrieks and howls, featuring members of JOHNS, The Fucking Hotlights, and PANG. Fans of Pissed Jeans, METZ, or The Jesus Lizard should definitely cram themselves by the radiator. In addition to Alpha Hopper is Facility Men, a band we wrote about in January, whose sound is Fugazi brash with early Les Savy Fav hooks. Also on the bill are scene vets, Fatal Figures, whose sleazy punk rock will round out an excellent night of fuzzy sounds. If you were a fan of Blowtops, this is some of their members most recent project. Doors are at 9pm and it's free dollars.

Last week, East Amherst bred producer/songwriter, Joe Mason, released the first single off his yet-to-be-named, full length set for release this spring. Currently spending the academic year at SUNY Purchase majoring in studio production, the newcomer's first summer ready single, titled "The Same," borrows from bands like Phoenix, Washed Out, and maybe even Albert Hammond Jr. If you are looking for a local comparison, Go Exploring would be a good place to start, as both Mason and Matt Schime seem to favor warm flourishes of sound and texture. Check out "The Same" below.

Tonight: The Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt!, Jack Toft, and Great Valley
Tonight a new DIY spot in Allentown under the name Dreamland will be hosting a jam packed DIY show that we are really excited about. On the bill is The Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt, a band I've personally been trying to catch since 2010, an act that's stage presence commands attention. It is high-energy, spastic, and fractured weirdo indie pop comparable to Dan Deacon leading a cult.
Indie rapper / alt-rhymesmith / all-around-Allentown staple, Jack Toft is also on the bill playing tunes from his latest release/collab with Chauncey Tails titled (kooky azz) cartoon world. In between acts, Chauncey Tails will be djing keeping the vibe super trill. As you may remember from our early January post, Chauncey was listed as one of our top five-ish acts to watch in 2014.
Also playing is Brattleboro, Vermont's Great Valley. The band's descriptor compares them to the "soundtrack to a children’s show version of Twin Peaks," to which I can agree and not really come up with a better alternative. Great Valley reminds me of Ariel Pink's 80's laced throwback jams.
This mega-bill also has Orlando's Michael Parallax, who's semi-sullen yet super-posi electro-pop jams are similar to that of School of Seven Bells, an upbeat xx, or a depressed Chunk of Change EP.
Last but certainly not least is experimental Nietzsche's stalwart, Pam Swarts will be sure to bring the noise if anyone else has left it at home. Doors are a very early 5pm and donate to the out of town band fund.

Tonight: RADARADA w/Matt Script
Mr. Goodbar and the mysterious Mr. Goodbar upstairs have been booking some great up-and-coming acts as of late. Case in point, tonight they play host to chill-hop sixsome, RADARADA, and Buffalo-born, Chicago-rewired, exported back to Buffalo, Matt Script. Both of these bands were noted back in early January as the top five(ish) acts to watch out for in 2014. For first timers, RADARADA is a live instrument hip-hop act, similar to The Roots or early Gym Class Heroes (pre-“New Friend Request”). Script is quite the opposite. When running solo, Matt Script depends on a looper to bring his sound together to make complicated one man band indie-pop gems comparable to that of Matt Pond or Blood Orange. Acts go on around 11pm and there is a $3 cover. Check below to see what you are in store for.

Copy Manager Releases Music Video For "Look"
Over the weekend, one of buffaBLOG’s recent music obsessions, Copy Manager, released her debut video, “Look.” The video features Copy Manager creepily practicing witchcraft in a cape as well as running through snowy fields without a coat on. Do capes count as coats? I’ll have to google that. Regardless, “Look,” seems to be one of CM’s new releases as it is not on the act’s self titled debut released two months ago. Fans of the film Pi, Cheesecats, or female-fronted lo-fi minimalist distortion would dig it. Checkout “Look” below and “look” out for Copy Manager at Steak and Cake’s three year birthday bash on Feb 15th.

Recently we discovered the aggressive indie rockers, Facility Men, by scouring the back alleys of bandcamp. Their two-song demo was recorded with local go-to, Matt Smith of Hi/Lo Studios, and has been on constantly looped at the buffaBLOG office in between the new KooLIE HiGH and Ben Morey albums. Facility Men are semi-raucous and brash, much like early Les Savy Fav or Fugazi, but the instrumentation is as inviting as a heavily punk influenced band can be. Check out "Top Gift" below to grab a sample of Facility Men.

Just Announced: Bear Hands
In between copying/pasting music.com headlines to social media and feeding Buffalo some of the best up-and-coming underground bands like 311, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Sublime, Alternative 107.7 announced today the debut of their new concert series titled "You Saw Them First." Teaming up with After Dark Entertainment, the partnership announced this morning their first booking in the series, bringing Brooklyn buzz band Bear Hands back to Buffalo after a year and a half absence (so technically you will see them a second time if you were at the Mohawk show summer 2012). The show is set for Friday, February 21st at the Waiting Room, and tickets can be purchased at the After Dark HQ (630 Elmwood Ave) from 11am-5:30pm, Monday-Friday. In the meantime, enjoy some Lorde Bear Hands.

Tonight everyone's favorite DIY speakeasy will quench your Friday night indie rock thirst. Mapmaker, a buzzing Buffalo band for 2014, debuted their first couple Jawbreaker hinged tunes in 2013’s fourth quarter. Also on the bill is Utica based Comfy, a band making waves in the WNY area as of late. Their sound can best be described as a retro-jangle Saturday Looks Good to Me type feel. Rounding out the evening is Ithaca's Why+the+Wires, sounding almost like an anxious Lucero. The band fresh off the heels of last night’s Punks + Tots show so hopefully they didn’t pull all their punches on Main St. Last and certainly not least on the menu is Buffalo based Supergoner (Dinosaur Jr. influenced indie rock that’s been around for the past 11 years).
Music kicks of tonight at 9:30. Bring some money for the out of town acts, and if you haven’t been to the Jungle Gym before, just ask the right person for the address.

Without a doubt, Spiral Scratch (291 Bryant St.) is hosting the best show of 2014 (thus far) tonight in their tiny backroom/basement hybrid concert hall. On the bill is Zealot, a Japandroids-y three piece who sprung onto the scene late last fall and were dubbed one of our top five Buffalo bands to watch in 2014. Also featured on said list is Alex Berkley, who will be returning with a full band backing, the Atlanta Falcons, for the first time in about five years. Not to be forgotten are indie rockers Returners, making their first "returning" gig in 2014. Lastly are late 90's rock revivalists Wooden Waves, who will be playing some tracks from their upcoming album titled, Wilder Dreams, set to be released sometime in late winter/early spring. Get there early because that place fills up quickly and gets uncomfortable if you have to watch from the stairs. Doors are at 6pm with a suggested donation type situation. I would suggest $5-$7.

Brat'ya, one of the side projects from Smart House and Automap member Alek Ogadzhanov, released a new song via the act's soundcloud page yesterday. As you may remember, Ogadzhanov was the brains behind our #3 Buffalo track of 2013, "Car Ride." "Maps," his latest, is a very driving cut of 80s synth's mixed with experimental percussion, and fans of Metronomy would be wise to check out. We are still trying to figure out the difference between all of Ogadzhanov's projects here at the blog, but in the mean time, check out "Maps" below.

The holiday hangover is starting to wear off here in Buffalo and it seems people are ready to for a new year in local music. In 2013, acts like the Malones, Jack Toft, Forealists, Mallwalkers, and Del Paxton helped to define the year in music. As for this year, we have a few acts in mind that could be making some waves. Here are our predications for the top acts you will be talking about in 2014.
It has been about 5 years since the Falcons last played live as a couple Mohawk Place dates and a Merlin's show was pretty much it for the band. Comprised of singer/songwriter Alex Berkley, Sonny Baker (Wooden Waves, Lazlo Holyfeld, A Hotel Nourishing), and Billy Fulton (Wooden Waves, Aye Karou, Besnyo), the trio has been teasing a return for about a year now, a return that looks to finally happen early this year. The band's sets look to include some fleshed out cuts of Berkley's solo work, in addition to some original songs. I never caught the Falcons on their first run, but I have always compared Berkley's work to some stripped down Weakerthans, so that could give some hint of their sound. Fun fact: the Falcons will make their 2014 debut this coming Saturday in Spiral Scratch's basement, so make sure to stop over to see what the buzz is all about. - MPM
We first got word of the Gowanda export late last fall. His blend of lo-fi R&B meets west coast grime was a fresh change of pace to the Buffalo producer scene. Outside of a sneaky set at the Squeaky Wheels holiday party at the Foundry last month, Chauncey is still a mystery to most of Buffalo. We think that 2014 is the year where that changes. Word is that Chauncey is working on a collaboration with Jack Toft, one of the musicians that owned the Buffalo music scene in 2013, so keep an eye out for this very intriguing project. - MPM
Copy Manager
Former Cheesecats front woman, Copy Manager, has emerged from the band’s death as a standout star with the capability of becoming a name in the Buffalo music scene. Although not as cutesy as Cheesecats and a hell of a lot more sardonic, Copy Manager maintains her previous works catchiness and adorability. With her debut solo full-length dropping this past December, Copy Manager is already recording another album anticipated for early Spring. If you haven’t heard Copy Manager’s lo-fi, organ-driven, brittle, Karen O-y songs about mistrust and heartache, now is about time. Catch her first solo set at Steak and Cake’s three year anniversary party on February 15th. - MJM
Zealot
Post-punk trio, Zealot, is the youngest band on our top bands to watch in 2014. With just one recorded song (“Magic Eye”), their debut was so eye-opening and attention-demanding that editor Mac McGuire proudly deemed the band one of the best discoveries of 2013. As a freshman band, Zealot has a lot of growing to do (promotion + release wise), but like most promising bands, they will get there eventually. Fans of local talents Mapmaker, Del Paxton or Wooden Waves should take note, and fans of national acts like No Age, Japandroids, or Cloud Nothings should take a chance. - MJM
Matt Script
Returning home after a stint in Chicago, Buffalo native Matt Script might not be a name that rings a bell but I’m sure you’ll hear about him very soon. Whether this multi-instrumentalist brings his full- band compositions or his solo looped songs, Script will without a doubt jump head first into Buffalo’s scene. His music can best be described as Matt Pond’s earnestness with Blood Orange’s range, topped by Will Scheff’s sensibilities and Strokes appeal. I have a feeling Matt Script with a full-band could fill that Malones void that Buffalo is craving. - MJM
Honorable Mention
Radarada
Ok, I know we said 5 acts so this is cheating a bit, but Radarada has me intrigued. The hip hop act, which features blog fav Tommy Too as co-MC, has a full fledged backing band, recalling the Roots, Breakestra, and early Gym Class Heroes. The group has nothing to speak of in terms of recorded material, in fact, the only clip of them is a pretty crude Youtube video (watch here) that I hope does not do the band justice. They seem to be developing a bit of a residency at Hardware, in addition to gigs at Duke's, Goodbar, and the Gypsy Parlor, so there will be plenty of opportunities to catch them live this year. Word is they are working on some debut recorded material for early 2014, so keep an eye out. - MPM

California expat turned New York mainstay, Edwang, delivered yet another noteworthy reworking this week, adding to the producer's rapidly growing discography. In his most recent work, Edwang combines the vocals from 2011's hip hop hit, "Look at Me Now" by Chris Brown ft. Busta Rhymes and Lil Wayne and dubs it over Moby's chilled out "A Case for Shame," perfectly counterbalancing Rhyme's signature urgent flow. Don't worry, he edits out Chris Brown. Check it out below.

Day 9 of our 12 Days of Christmas series comes from Rochester-based Christmas collective, The Abominable Snowband. Formed two holiday seasons ago, the band reappears soon after Thanksgiving pie and disappears after the final broadcasting of A Christmas Story. Their slightly chilled out version of "Run Run Rudolph" is quite nice, doing justice to this seasonal surf classic. Although it looks like the band is being put back in the attic, there's always next year.

Day 7 of our 12 Days of Christmas and we are still going strong. We had previously lined up a different song to showcase, but late last night Buffalo/Rochester's indie rock veterans, the gifted children, released a very share worthy Christmas album titled, Christmas, Volume 6. This is the gifted children's sixth holiday themed album, not even counting the hundreds of originals the band has delivered in the roughly past twenty years. This band is a fairly fluid collective, always revolving around lead man Jeff Suszczynski's needs, wants, and visions. The gifted children consistency in delivery is incredibly impressive and noteworthy. You can download the full-length here (which I highly recommend), or individual tracks here.
